Why I’ve started using embedded nonfiction (ref: @TeachLikeAChamp /SoR) within my texts to build background knowledge. When students understand the context and have a rich understanding of how a story comes into play, engaging and using certain skills comes much more smoothly.

Teaching skills like "finding the main idea" is way less effective than just teaching knowledge.

Me talking about taking feedback and consequences well to my 8th graders: Consequence is no coincidence. One of my GATE students: Isn’t that Lauryn Hill?. The kids are gonna be alright.

I typically don’t like wishlists, but the priority this year is organization for my students. The binders would help to organize their English classwork by notes, assignments, texts/handouts, essays, etc. If you feel led, any help is greatly appreciated.

The first photo is a book one of my GATE students is reading currently. The second is a work sample of our theme paragraphs for Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” prose poem. FASE reading and Three Reads of the text is really helping my students get the most out of analyzing.

Level 3 (Evaluate)-Independent Read, come up with the theme of the text as their exit ticket. Followed up today with a retrieval practice question and scaffolded their thematic statements into paragraphs with direct quotes as textual evidence.🤝.
