Surprisingly large correlations between fine motor skills and academic outcomes. Biggest correlate is ability using a pencil/pen. True for adults too. Humans are embodied creatures. Our hands help our brains to learn.

"Keep the hands in mind" — indeed. Fine motor skills (FMS) have been largely overlooked in the era of the internet. A new meta-analysis identified a positive correlation between FMS and academic success, and the details are fascinating. The study aggregated 118 articles to

Only 41%, of children between the age of zero to four are being read to every day, “a decline of nine percentage points from 2019 and 15 percentage points in 2012.” We are definitely not messaging the importance of early reading to families.

A lot has happened this year. If you'd like a recap of what's happened to education research and statistics, here's my attempt. This might be a good one to listen to on your commute today. (Audio play button below headline. 16 minutes long.)

Felt this applying to state lists! "The recomm. to go straight from letter sounds to phonics runs contrary to the received wisdom in the SoR. It contradicts almost every major authority, & the many phonemic awareness zealots on social media. In some states it's against the law."

@NielsHoven @emzanotti Really want to push back on this idea that everyone should "do OG!" and all phonics are basically the same. They're really, really NOT. Highly recommend looking into Reading Simplified @ReadSimplified or @EBLIreads if you want to get serious about accelerating student learning

The @nypost asked me to weigh in on news this week that Ford has 5000 skilled mechanic jobs they can’t fill, even with six-figure salaries. Bring back trade schools? We have them. But you still have to be good at reading and math. https://t.co/HfmGVJc8nh

Nicholas Winton saved 669 Jewish children from the Nazis and told no one. He kept it secret for 50 years. In 1988, while sitting in a TV audience, he was surprised by the very children he rescued, now grown adults. https://t.co/j2yEijtVfF

Woah! Why are states mandating something that lacks evidence for student growth? "Knowing the theory and research is valuable (and it’s certainly interesting), but there’s minimal evidence that it changes teacher practice." https://t.co/mRfUSLv3og

“Dead LETRS”… @KataSolow’s WonkaThon entry had me at the title. We don’t have evidence that theory-only Professional Development improves outcomes. How do we get states to pivot? “The mandated PD (usually LETRS) is focused on theory and research. It is NOT connected to the

Yes, we should read novels as an entire class. A fifth grade 🧵My 5th graders just spent the past few weeks reading Number the Stars. It is a historical fiction novel that takes place in Denmark during WW2. Lois Lowry is a brilliant story teller. 1/

@jessica_sliman @karenvaites @ReadSimplified @ReadingLeagueMT @MissyPurcell @SciInTheMaking My extremely strong take is that we can do better than IMSE/Orton Gillingham! There are different approaches that will accelerate student learning faster and that are less cognitively-overloading.

I continue to be AMAZED by the remarkable acceleration our teachers are seeing after using linguistic phonics approaches such as @ReadSimplified and @EBLIreads The SoR community NEEDS to talk more about this.
