My latest article on Mississippi’s and Louisiana’s 10+ year surge past Virginia schools – inspired by @karenvaites & @chadaldeman. 2024 NAEP data shows MS and LA are outperforming VA w both the least advantaged and most advantaged subgroups. 1/12 https://t.co/ZHxuI4wDs4

One takeaway / reminder I had from my conversation with @vkoganpolisci is that low-turnout school board elections are dominated by older homeowners who care about their property values and *the perception* of school quality but not how much kids are actually learning -->

Hard to argue with @daisychristo on this one: “If online content is so addictive that it can lead to adults having less sex, it’s probably fair to speculate that it will lead to kids studying less algebra.”

Schools have built systems that normalize waiting. “Let’s see how they do next year.” “Maybe they’ll grow into it.” Meanwhile, the gap widens. Early action isn’t optional, it’s equity. @ChadAldeman says it best: Do. Not. Wait. https://t.co/RjMJC6lHHS

I wish I could skywrite @ChadAldeman’s latest piece above every Kindergarten parent night. “If your child is behind in the early grades, the odds that they will catch up decline every single year. Do. Not. Wait.” Really, look at this data:

If a child starts behind in reading, the odds of catching up fall fast: • 49% in kindergarten • 29% in first grade • 18% in second • 5% in third We don’t have a third-grade reading crisis. We have an early learning problem. Great take, @ChadAldeman. https://t.co/vNjkhx0CSt

I increasingly believe that rote memorization of major geographic features like US states, major rivers, countries, etc. needs to return in full force. Should be treated like memorizing times tables. Basic building blocks for understanding the country and the world.

{new} Are some schools doing an excellent job with one group of students while neglecting others? In Louisiana, I found that schools that did well overall also did well for their economically disadvantaged students.
