My latest for @CAmericain_mag is on the decline of the war / military movie. Beginning with a look back to the classics of the past to consider what made them great, I then move on to more recent fare like Dunkirk, Fury, 1917, The Outpost, Greyhound, Devotion and more. If

I don’t know why it’s not obvious to everyone that AI is going to cheapen images in every sense. Almost everything will become ‘meh’.
100% AI Generated. I remember when I would spend 30 hours on conceptualization, modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering to finally get an image like this. And now, anyone who can communicate and has the idea can do it in less than 15 minutes. Everything is going to change.

Houellebecq: “The Left feels lost, and just like an injured animal, it becomes mean. It wasn’t the case when I started writing. It now feels itself dying so it becomes mean.”.
"I was a skilled steel worker. Now I'm delivering parcels for minimum wage, self employed, no rights. It stinks. Think we'll lose the house. Vote Brexit, they said, save Steel. Vote Boris, they said, save Steel. I'll still vote tory again - I don't trust Labour"

Black people built Stonehenge. You might disagree. You might even have evidence to the contrary. But you have to ask yourself: is this really worth failing my GCSE over? Black people built Stonehenge.

This is now the standard midwit take. At bottom, the CIA funding Abstract Expressionism is irrelevant, because the move into abstraction predated that funding by over 50 years & can clearly be put down to art’s own inner logic in the age of photography & mechanical reproduction.
Reminder that modern art was a CIA psy-op. Former CIA officials came clean on this during the '90s, confirming that the agency used abstract art by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and others to promote American culture during the Cold War. The intent was to portray America

The perennial appeal of this tale (which this account has told a few times now, I think) is it allows bores to write off the likes of Pollock and Rothko as fakes, frauds. But really CIA involvement was incidental; this art succeeded because it resonated, & continues to resonate.

All ‘resist capitalism’ type sentiments from wokes should be viewed as part of what Baudrillard called (specifically in reference to The Matrix) ‘trompe-l'œil critique’ - the system’s fake critique of itself. Woke capital (the phenomenon) is this bogus critique turned up the max.

The Anglosphere is really in full psychotic meltdown at this point.
Hippocratic oath be damned. Canadian doctor says that the unvaccinated should be completely denied an ICU and medical care for ANY injury or sickness, even if not COVID. Unvaxxed and in a car wreck? You’re on your own with this doctor.

You can attack twee Little England aesthetics but you’d better have something better to offer instead. This is what differentiates English modernists like Wyndham Lewis, Ballard and Mark Fisher from the not-even-mediocre likes of Otto English.
Please beware the Twitter accounts sharing seemingly harmless nostalgia, which are, in reality, spreading xenophobia and racism. @Otto_English has dubbed this trend #Shitstalgia. Here is a case in point: Sandy of Suffolk. 1/n

Left-liberals really hate smoking, which is strange as they care little about healthy living otherwise. I wonder if it’s got something to do with the cigarette being such a potent symbol of 20th-century ideas of freedom and independence.
On tomorrow's front page: Smoking to be BANNED in pub gardens, outside footy stadiums and in kids’ parks, leaked government plans reveal.

Watching this series gives you an inkling as to why the Great War was the most psychologically and spiritually devastating event in modern British history.
Captain Blackadder: "How are you feeling, Darling?" . Captain Darling "Ahm - not all that good, Blackadder. Rather hoped l'd get through the whole show. Go back to work at Pratt & Sons; keep wicket for the Croydon gentlemen; marry Doris. Made a note in my diary on the way here.
