Assistant Director of Education
@greenshawtrust
. Former Headteacher. Interested in teaching, dogs, mountains - ideally at the same time. All views my own.
@LordAshcroft
Actually, I think the point is that we DID question the government's ineptitude in 1940. It led to Chamberlain resigning - arguably a very significant turning point.
Lots of (deserved) celebration of top performers for Progress 8 this week.
But one thing jumped out - these schools tended to be less disadvantaged than average OR more EAL than average.
So what about schools with high proportions of disadvantaged, non-EAL students?
🧵
Taught a terrible lesson this morning, then got some hugely helpful feedback. Exactly how it should be done:
✅low stakes
✅focused on actionable steps which I can use next lesson
✅a culture of openness where it's normal for everyone (including the Head) to receive feedback
Anyone upset by Rod Liddle's views on teachers - worth remembering he felt the primary barrier to him being a teacher is that he would want to sleep with Year 10s.
Just been reminded of this from 2012 in the Spectator.
Come for Rod Liddle's meditations on what type of teacher he would be. Stay for his conclusion that he'd be a paedophile.
But GCSEs should be level playing fields. And if some students get to write about personal experiences and others have to rely on imagination and more creative responses that's not an even question.
Teaching really is the best. Taught all of these legends GCSE or IB English years ago - so was very surprised to hear a shout of "Mr Farmbrough" on a Sunday morning in Snowdonia.
It's been a very tough week so far, but finding out today that
@HolmleighParkHS
will have a large waiting list in Year 7 for the first time ever has made my term!
I very rarely post emails but I found this one incredibly moving. Super proud of our
@HolmleighParkHS
students today for their quiet dignity and respect, and especially grateful to our cadets who led our Act of Remembrance so well.
#LestWeForget
This has been a long time coming - but so proud of all the staff, students and parents at
@HolmleighParkHS
.
We've known for a while that the school is completely transformed from 2019, but delighted that Ofsted have now recognised this too!
Tuffley, this one's for you all.
We are delighted to announce that Holmleigh Park has been judged as ‘good’ in all areas by Ofsted. This reflects the dedication, hard work, and commitment of the entire school community, from students and parents, to staff and governors.
Full report:
So ridiculously proud of
@HolmleighParkHS
. Five years ago, we were in Special measures and in the bottom 1% for Progress8.
Turnarounds are hard, harder during COVID, and harder still in a school of 1,400 - but this is great recogniton of how hard students and staff have worked.
We are pleased to announce that for the first time in the school's history we have achieved a positive Progress 8 score.
This means that our outgoing Y11 students made above national average progress. A real testament to their hard work and willingness to take responsibility.
@AhmedKhattabUK
Supplyfall.
After the english department shared drive is downloaded by a supply teacher looking to sell the lessons on TES, Head of Department Bond must compose a suitably stern email to the team about locking your computer when you're not using it.
🚨Job alert!🚨
We are looking for an exceptional leader to be our Head of School
@HolmleighParkHS
. You'll be working with me to lead the school's day to day operations, and should be looking to progress to headship in the near future. DM for details.
So, so proud of our students today. Despite not getting a fair chance to be judged on their own merits, they showed tremendous strength of character. Pretty humbling to watch so many put their own disappointment aside to check their teachers and friends were OK. 1/
We will appeal against the standardisation process not recognising the school's improvement over the last year, but meanwhile I'm taking some comfort from the fact that if our students keep showing the same generosity of spirit they showed today, they'll go on to great things.
@greeborunner
@EnserMark
"Based on your work so far in the last five years, I think you're on track for a 3"
"Actually Sir, I'd prefer a 9."
"No problem. I'll update that now. Glad we avoided that potential fiasco!"
It's 8:20pm and I've already had 25 emails from staff asking to be on the key worker school rota. So humbled by how amazing and resilient our staff at
@HolmleighParkHS
are.
Blown away by
@TrinityAcademyL
today. Sky high expectations coupled with so much genuine warmth between staff and students. Just magical.
Huge thanks to
@Kathryncafferk1
and
@_MGosling
for being so generous with their time.
A year ago another Headteacher told me we'd struggle to recruit or retain anyone. A year later, we have pretty much the same amazing staff, with some great new additions like
@meganbows
,
@emilycdavey
@oliverjsmith
and now
@DavidDidau
. Looking forward to updating that same Head.
@BreesAnna
@blepharon
@wiseoldsoc
Hi Anna. Thanks for the heads up (I'm a Headteacher). Just to let you know, I've just checked Google Classroom and can see that all of my teachers and TAs over 55 have been setting work and giving feedback today.
Nope. Still here. Never worked in a school with PP below 40%. I trained with 6 others in my placement school, 5 are still in education. This sort of rhetoric is deeply unhelpful. We get enough criticism as a profession without doing it ourselves.
A quiet week
@HolmleighParkHS
- but in the best possible way. Despite everything going on nationally, staff and students have just calmly and cheerfully focused on learning. Proud doesn't begin to cover it.
So proud of our amazing support staff and parent volunteers
@HolmleighParkHS
. Over 1,000 tests in 2 days running like clockwork, which means we get all kids back in lessons on Monday. Buzzing.
This is exactly what many of us have been warning for months. Schools in disadvantaged areas will be hit hard. Worst in schools which were previously inadequate but were on track to improve this year, which are usually *checks notes* IN THE MOST DISADVANTAGED AREAS.
My experience is that inadequate schools are full of outstanding teachers already, who have chosen a tougher job because they know the impact they can have. Better approach is to invest in improving underperforming schools so those teachers can flourish.
Huge congratulations to this guy, for convincing me that after his bath he really needed to go to the toilet in the garden, and that he 100% would not not roll in the mud.
This is why I love being part of
@GreenshawTrust
.
@Behaviour_Guy
dropping in to talk to our Year 11s about how well the first cohort at
@HenleyBankHigh
did, and why ours are on track for exactly the same success!
Took some visitors from another school around
@HolmleighParkHS
today. First class we went into was a brilliant, ambitious and challenging year 7 science lesson. After we came and I was asked if we could also see a lower set. Enjoyed explaining we'd just seen our nurture group!
Sun is shining and I'm at risk of spending my day looking at my phone so I'm going to lock this thread. Worth reiterating that my point isn't that disadvantaged students can't answer this. Ours did, and I think they did well (1)
What a team. Nearly 3,500 tests done since Thursday last week. Their hard work has meant that we could get all students back full time from Monday 8th. Legends.
#teamHP
This term has been challenging - but so, so rewarding. Staff and students have taken everything in their stride and with a smile. This is SLT delivering pizzas to Year 11 yesterday - who all stayed for an extra hour's revision even though it was the last day of term! Legends.
In the post to all of our amazing staff at
@HolmleighParkHS
. I thought handwriting notes to all 180 would be torturous, but it just underscored how amazing our team is!
@BCAMrHarris
@DocProc89
Kind of my point. You'd teach them Dickens as it's on the literature syllabus - so it's a fair question. Kids' knowledge of holidays depends on whether their parents have taken them on some. Exams should assess what you've been taught, not something dependent on parental income.
I'm very sad to be leaving
@HolmleighParkHS
after four incredible years, but there's nobody I'd rather hand it over to than
@DanHudson84
. Incredibly exciting times ahead for the school!
Have loved my first term in a trust role - such a privilege to get to work with so many exceptional schools across
@GreenshawTrust
. My highlights:
✅ 2x Ofsted inspections
✅ Second highest performing large MAT for p8
✅ Working on exciting trust-wide Sixth Form & PD projects
@CelebratingEdu1
This is awful. Whether you like Oak or not, teachers are volunteering to put their resources up in the hope that they might help some kids learn. Now somewhere an English teacher is questioning if that effort was worth it. Disgraceful.
A few standouts:
I mentioned
@HarrisBromley
before.
I'm biased but I think
@HenleyBankHigh
in second is the most stunning school transformation in the country -0.87 P8 in 2018, now +0.93.
I'd never heard of
@ParksideSch
- but with 52% FSMEver and 0.49 P8 I want to visit!
4. We need to do more as a system to address the chronic underachievement of disadvantaged white British students (not quite the same group that I've been looking at - but a significant overlap).
I'm not a fan of CAGs and was against cancelling GCSEs, but... we'll make this work. Teachers have bucket loads of integrity. Yes, there will be some inflation and yes, the Daily Mail will be apoplectic - but kids will get what they *individually* deserve. Which is what matters.
Unbelievably proud to be part of
@GreenshawTrust
. Our staff genuinely change lives every day. Second highest p8 score of any large MAT - and that's all while taking on some of the most disadvantaged schools in the county.
Our schools have made an average of +0.92 improvement after 5 years of joining
@GreenshawTrust
.
We are incredibly proud of all our students and staff for making this possible.
Lots of well-deserved and eloquent praise for school staff on here right now. But a particular shout out has to go to whichever member of staff is responsible for cover - often an under appreciated role but superhuman right now!
2. The schools which don't quite get the amazing P8s, but are trying their hardest every day, are also heroes. Teachers, leaders, and MATs who choose to work in/with these schools should be commended.
Seeing a lot of posts along the lines of either "Not now, massive curriculum overhaul" or "With what teachers?"
Both are valid - but having led Sixth Forms and Schools offering combinations of IB, A Level and BTEC courses, I *think* this is a good idea.
Here's why... 🧵
We're going to keep teaching up until 14:55 on Friday. Not just because every day of learning matters, but because we want every single student to know how much they matter to us. So proud of our staff
@HolmleighParkHS
right now.
First full term finished
@HolmleighParkHS
. Couldn't be more proud of our amazing staff and students for such a cracking term, and can't wait to keep learning and improving in 2020!
@ckcarroll01
I'm not ideologically against it and it's a great topic for a debate. But at a cohort level it's an easier question for those who have direct experience than those who don't and that's not how gcses should work.
Let’s start with the top 100 for P8.
Loads of amazing schools, but only ONE (
@HarrisBromley
) has more disadvantaged students AND fewer EAL students than national average.
Awesome school, though interestingly its single-sex (generally overrepresented at top).
If the last couple of weeks have shown one thing, it's that we've got the best SLT in the world
@HolmleighParkHS
. Incredible leadership to keep the school going and set up an outstanding virtual school. And still smiling - even if they're not all in the frame!
@RLong_Bailey
@GavinWilliamson
As a headteacher, I find this hugely disappointing.
@educationgovuk
might not be getting everything right (who is, right not?!) but I don't doubt they're doing their best. They've got enough to do without you "keeping
@GavinWilliamson
busy."

After one of our
@HP_Maths
Year 11s completed every possible task on
@hegartymaths
, I am spending Sunday morning doing VERY IMPORTANT HEADTEACHER THINGS.
Great first week back
@HolmleighParkHS
. The new year 7 and 12s are amazing, and it was wonderful to see everyone else back. But - purely selfishly - I haven't enjoyed anything at work in the last six months as much as I enjoyed teaching a full class of year 11s this morning!
That's a wrap on 2022 and what a year! So proud of how far we've come
@HolmleighParkHS
, but even more excited for what comes next! Feeling very lucky to have the world's best staff.
@JUMcQ789
@stevewillshaw
Yep, agreed and loads of disadvantaged kids will have written brilliant responses. But my point is GCSEs should be as level a playing field as possible - and this question gives an advantage to the kids who have experienced going on holiday and can write about it.
We're so, so, so proud of all of our Year 11s today. They have worked so hard and deserve every success in the future. We can't wait to see so many of them back for
@HPSixth
!
I love getting to visit so many amazing
@GreenshawTrust
schools, but
@HolmleighParkHS
is always a bit special.
Scramble enjoyed getting in the Christmas spirit today even though he got the wrong day for Christmas jumpers.
Don't get me started. We took on
@HolmleighParkHS
this year with - 1.04. Year 11 absolutely seized their chance and worked their hearts out - and now feel they shouldn't have bothered.
@GavinWilliamson
said all students would get the recognition the deserve. How is that fair?
This is going to be brilliant. Have learned so much from various
#weareinbeta

Sunset tonight, 15 minutes' commute from
@HolmleighParkHS
. Moving to Gloucestershire was the best thing I ever did for my quality of life. You've got 24 hours to do the same thing!
Better plan: teachers to show warmth to returning students, but above all to concentrate on teaching them really, really well. In other words - what we try and do every day.
This is our staff canteen. Ok, it's not, but it IS Gloucester Services, just a short drive away. If you fancy upgrading your local service station for a bit of West Country luxury, we've got some great roles below👇

Inspiring recent visit to
@HolmleighParkHS
with 10th most improved GCSE results in England, pipping
@GloucsAcademy
into 11th place - best ever results for both. This boosts confidence & future opportunities for pupils - what academies were introduced to achieve. Congrats to all
Just had my booster at Churchdown Community Centre - hugely impressed with the organisation, went from car parking to jabbed in under three minutes (and that was with the centre running at full capacity). Seriously impressive. 👍

@HolmleighParkHS
. Great to see our staff back together. Great sessions on warm/strict from
@jamesdawsonking
, rank order assessment from
@kinzalouise
and teaching and learning from
@MissSMurray
. Plus 4/7 year groups lateral flow tested. 1/
@joon_of
Maybe. I totally get the intent of the question. We're 40% PP and some liked it. But there's a massive advantage to kids who'll be able to talk in detail about their experiences of one (or both!) and compare.
Absolutely exhausted after a pretty tough week, but so proud of our staff and students for taking every change in their strides. So good to feel like a proper school again!
All of these schools had p8 scores well below average two years ago when they joined
@GreenshawTrust
. Now they've broken the local grammar schools' dominance. If you want to be part of the same journey
@HolmleighParkHS
, you've got the weekend to apply!
Beautiful wild camp last night. The Carneddau on good form as always - barely saw a soul in 24 hours, despite the massive crowds elsewhere!
