The NYC broker fee system is broken. It’s confusing, costly, and unfair. It would be largely fixed by passing the FARE Act, which would simply require whichever party hires the broker to pay the broker fee. 2024 is the year to pass it.
A broker in Queens was offering apartment hunters the deal of a lifetime: a one-bedroom, rent-stabilized unit in Flushing for $1,100/month, well below market rate for the area.
The catch? A $15,000 broker fee.
