It’s been a while! (😬)
But, I have a new blog…
‘SEND and systems: A reflection toolkit.’
We have been working on a strategy to align & add consistency to our inclusion approach as a Trust.
The fundamentals are key to this.
Thank you ☺️
After being back over a week, I can officially say that schools are being failed.
We have opened fully, we have welcomed children back, we have put in the structures, routines and expectations in line with guidance. We have created action plans, rotas, risk
We’re trying out hessian backing boards to support low stimulation for children on the autism spectrum. It makes the work ‘pop’ which is an added bonus as well as being reusable, a little more eco friendly & allows work to be the main focus.
Mixed views from the team!
If we are told primary schools are open, we’ll open. But, there’s this deep sense of dread that I’m putting my children and staff in danger of serious illness. If you step back and look at what we are being asked to do, it’s insane. What’s the point of a 2 week lockdown?
families are now sat at home, losing education, work and mental health.
Massive kudos to schools for remaining positive and professional, but this is beyond frustrating.
Serious question - Where are the DFE getting their information from regarding how behind children are and how undisciplined they’ve become? It’s intriguing.
Why are SLT’s still insisting on planning formats for maths and English?
If you’re following a scheme (White Rose, PoR, Mastery etc..) the planning is ALREADY in existence. Why are you making your teachers literally copy and paste it to another format? Hours and hours of time
Hey teachers... you make children RUN into school. Actually want to run, to get there as quickly as possible for the day ahead.
Remember that.
You’re bloody amazing.

Signs of child poverty will need to be prioritised in safeguarding training this year. There will be those families that do not ‘qualify’ for PP and FSM, but still massively impacted. I think these should concern us the most.
Are schools setting up hardship funds or similar?
assessments. We have asked the impossible of our anxious staff & we have asked for more trust than ever before from our families. Yet, track and trace does NOT work, testing site availability in localities do NOT work, postal tests are NON-EXISTENT.God knows how many perfectly fine
Low level disruption in classes is the death knell for most lessons. Children, particularly in primary, need to know (and feel, and understand) what you are expecting of them. If you are explaining and modelling something, the T needs to be able to scan the room, look at work,
Sorry to talk work, but I did a piece of action research across lockdown 1&2 around the strategies used in remote learning & how this could support learners with SEN&D. Some really basic things (this is obviously the ‘twitter lite’ version!) this may be helpful heading into 2022.
My mum pretended to be dead to someone that she thought was a telesales person.
Turns out it was a refund for her cancelled holiday and now has to confirm, somehow, that she is actually alive.
Just brilliant.
Can we please stop using ‘No Covid cases in our school’ as a badge of honour or accomplishment.
It’s not some weird contest and it’s not something anyone can actually prevent beyond risk assessment measures.
If we are all still getting colds....🤷🏼♀️
My genuine question is...
When will the DFE decide that children have ‘caught up’ ?
When the money runs out?
When the disadvantaged are at national averages?
After a specific time period?
#DFE
Ofsted should do annual safeguarding inspections, stop overall gradings and continue looking into the ramifications they have on the communities they place as inadequate. The ripple effect is huge and impact on wellbeing is bigger.
Your curriculum is worthless if not all pupils can access it. Think about all those children that fall outside of the linear model of teaching. What does your lesson look like to them? What scaffolding & support are you putting in place? Prioritise that and you’ll fly.
#inclusion
If schools were informed even ‘slightly’ before the papers, we could put together letters, update risk assessments & ensure we had thought through contingency plans. Purely to reassure communities, protect attendance rates & ultimately…education.
Why can’t they understand that?
My daughter put on a dress and with absolute delight, shouted the words...
“It’s got POCKETS!!!!”
It’s innate. It’s nature. It’s normal.
#PocketDelight
Can people please stop conflating behaviour with SEN.
There are plenty of SEN children without behavioural issues.
There are plenty of children with behavioural issues that are NOT SEN.
That is all.

I think what Marcus Rashford has done is phenomenal, really amazing effort and will support thousands of families through summer.
But, why are the voices of our profession completely and utterly ignored?
Why does it take a letter and campaign from a 22yr old footballer?
What would be amazing is paying to train up SaLT’s, Ed Psychologists, SEMH workers and OT’s and get them in schools to cascade proper training, work with parents and support those children that are always ‘catching up.’ Then you’d see something transformative.
My genuine question is...

We rightly prioritised feeding families. We were informed we were ‘child care providers’ in the very first weeks. We sent out resource packs, created risk assessments with no decent guidance and scrabbled together technology. A poor piece from Ofsted on this one I’m afraid.
Does anyone remember when Brian Harvey from E17 ran himself over, in his own car, because he ate too many jacket potatoes?
I think about it all the time.
What is being asked of Secondary schools is absolute insanity. Some have already closed, some have a day to go. I cannot imagine how the DFE can ask anything of them after this. Timing is grossly misjudged, it’s badly planned out and hugely damaging to mental health.
It’s so sad to hear people moaning about these amazing resources, made by teachers.Hours & hours ploughed into lessons, plans & videos. If your own specialism isn’t covered, you know what? Do it yourself.
On that note, here is the music website my team created.
I am very slightly broken, but did it!

finisher from someone that couldn’t run to the end of the road in May…😂
A huge thank you for the generous sponsorship, advice and luck! We raised over £1000 for

Wonderful stuff

In 2020, I didn’t realise I would utter the words...
“How big are your bubbles?”
Without a hint of sarcasm, irony or rudeness.
I’m done with this year now.
I’ve peaked.
I think some leaders need to go and work in a truly deprived area of the country to really understand poverty.
Some of the utter nonsense that people come out with to remedy this massively ignored issue is laughable. ‘They need to get a job.’
‘They need to prioritise food.’
🙄
Leadership isn’t a parade. Leadership is showing people dignity in their darkest moments, showing compassion and confidentiality. Being thoughtful and selfless.
We clearly still have a lot to learn.
Whether you’ve been through SATS, Ofsted, moderation, monitoring, challenging conversations, general chaos or just a crappy week!
We’ve made it to the weekend!
Cheers

I hate to say this, but the advice I’d give to NQTs and RQTs is to be wary of people that present as ‘Woke’, offering to help and aligning to your values. Don’t be dazzled by a blog or a book, or follower numbers. Use your instinct, if something feels off, it probably is. That is
I’m sorry, but that just isn’t always true. Sometimes EHCP provision isn’t accurate, up to date or specific enough. Some schools do everything (and more!) and they are left with no other option than suspension. Consideration for the whole school community also has be a factor.
After the hugely helpful responses asking for resources & guidance for welcoming Ukrainian pupils, I’ve (roughly!) put together a document so they are all in one place.
Please feel free to share if you think it’s useful to others.

On reflection of an SLT meeting this morning,we discussed Mr Adonis’s tweet and the implications that may cause, including the anxiety and guilt being caused for teachers and staff that can’t get into school, are on rota, shielding or at home with children. There is a danger that
I can’t help but feel like
#DontExcludeMe
is patronising and attempting to shame schools. The majority of schools don’t take exclusions lightly, put tonnes of provision in place and do actually pay attention to the triggers and patterns. 🙄

Funny, GP’s not liking the idea of league tables due to the unfair nature of the way it doesn’t reflect the communities and demographic they work within.
While everyone is thinking deeply about their curriculums & building on previous ideas, remember to step outside of it & put it under the lens of your pupils with SEND.
What does it look like, feel like & how can they see themselves being involved in the learning.

Now we’re all talking about reshuffles, I’m excited to say that I start a new role as Executive Inclusion Lead with
@tooyoungtobeceo
’s new primary trust of 10 schools from January.
A new challenge and more to learn! 😊
Absolutely outstanding. A government that won’t accept that lowering police numbers affects crime levels but will brag about shoplifting being lower during a time where there aren’t actually any shops to lift.
My daughter thinks that if you have dinner somewhere else, it doesn’t count as dinner and you have to have something else when you get home.
This is a theory I can fully support.
My boss, who is a bit of a star,
@W15TSY
sent this through...
it tracks the changes in documents, so you don’t need to go through all the guidance again from scratch. I hope it helps...
