I think I need to say what many in the strategic studies community is quietly thinking, and indeed saying to me. Israel appears qualitatively far weaker than we had presupposed, and the dysfunction has bleed into many facets of their political and security apparatus (not all).

The idea of banning the Palestinian flag in the UK concerns me deeply to be honest. Palestine has various forms of international recognition, and is recognised as a state by around 80 countries (9 from the G20) People are from there and have a legitimate right to express that.

Regardless of how you feel about this conflict or who you support, Israel has played its hand shambolically. At the macro level its regional policy is in tatters, at the micro level it has achieved none of its stated aims. They're in a no man's land of sub-optimal choices.

The lack of strategic planning for a range of eventualities in Gaza is staggering to me frankly. How can Israel not have a preferred end-state for a territory it considers hostile? How can their be no plan for effective counterinsurgency in the Strip above the tactical?

I think back to past Israeli leaders, Dayan, Rabin, Sharon, Barak...they would be looking on aghast at the current crop of politicians and securocrats. You may not have liked them, but they knew what they wanted to achieve and how to do it. This lot don't, it's that simple.

But it is clear to me that there is no consensus on what to do, how to do it, or what the second order effects of that might mean. Israel should have turned to Arab neighbours and brought them in to finally take down Hamas. Instead it drove them all away, and isolated itself.

Any half decent military usually has a shopping list of plans ready to go for its leaders. Perhaps those plans do exist...and maybe the issue is that civilian leadership just simply doesn't know what a military instrument can and cannot do, and where it aids the political debate.

There's a lot of debate about "from the river to the sea" being unacceptable, and maximalist claims being code words for antisemitism/genocide. This is well understood. But we need consistent standards here. What does this mean if it's from an official Israeli Gov channel?

When things happen in KSA everyone tries to come up with logical answers to what has happened. Prime example “the King must be dying” There was no evidence to suggest it. Occam’s razor folks, MbS goes after his rivals. That’s just what he does, we’ve had five years to learn.

I dealt with this issue as an expert witness in court when local Turks complained about Kurds flying PKK flags (proscribed in the UK). The ruling was clear, Kurds (also not a state) could fly the flag of Kurdistan; but not the PKK flag, which was a clear offence.

The US isn't interested in Syria, the US is interested in Syria...it's a 200 year old war between Turks and Kurds, not the US' problem. The Kurds have let ISIS out of jail, the Turks will get sanctioned, now US sending VP to the region to mediate. WHAT IS THE US POLICY???

I can't be the only one thinking this recent penchant for billionaires to go on joy rides up to space is just so poorly timed and frankly a bit crass, especially given how badly people have been faring the past year. Maybe better to spend your money on other things?

Good luck to them. Hegemony in the Middle East is like being the England football manager, sounds nice in principle, but in reality you're destined for failure and nasty media attacks. What if China Replaced U.S. Hegemony in the Middle East?

I really don't like hyperbole, but every word of Andrew's Tweet is true. You really cannot underestimate the size and scale of what has happened in the past 48 hours. It will cause irreparable damage to US power and prestige. There will need to be a number of resignations.

American foreign policy will take years to recover from this shambles of an exit from Afghanistan, if it ever does. Blinken is a busted flush. Biden is missing in action during an historic crisis. Huge boon to China and Russia.

A lot of empty desert above Iraq and Jordan for these drones to get shot down over…just sayin’ If the ballistic missiles don’t launch (and let’s hope they don’t) then this isn’t a true offensive move by the Iranians.

A reminder to UK followers today...there are big protests planned across the country. You may not like them. You may not agree with them. But people are allowed to express how they feel, and you have the right to challenge them. Free speech is hard, authoritarianism is easy.

The Twitter lionisation of Jacinda Arden is perplexing to me. She does indeed seem a very decent human being. But is in charge of a country with a population half the size of London, Auckland international airport that carries just 12% of the passenger numbers of London.

Think tankers/event planners of the world. Can we get rid of the term “fireside chat” as a way of jazzing up Zoom events please? There’s no fire, it’s not a chat it’s one person speaking at a time, the rest of us are sat in tracksuits listening in Cool phrases don’t change this.
