I'm very excited to share that I have officially signed a contract to write the book "Feminism in Nursing".
My hope is that this book contributes to our collective understanding of the issues that face our profession and a new perspective on the solutions required.
The Royal College of Nursing is having to use members' money to defend its decision to dismiss the man who made the below tweets. He is a nurse.
He seems to think this was not the right decision & hopes to be reinstated back in power as chair of council.
Whilst I support consenting adults making whatever relationship choices they would like and have no issue with consensual non-monogamy...
Is this appropriate to display in a high school? My daughter's school is displaying this & it's making the kids uncomfortable.
Nursing is not a fallback career for people who have "messed up" their a-levels.
Nursing is a highly skilled profession for bright, innovative, academically and emotionally intelligent people.
This is beyond appalling.
Our NHS is held together by internationally educated nurses.
We expect them to move here, help fill our enormous staff vacancies, keep our loved ones safe...
But leave their kids without a mother or father?
Today in Parliament we have laid an order to ban overseas care workers from bringing dependants.
This is just one part of our plan to deliver the biggest-ever cut in migration 👇
Nurses who progress into advanced/consultant nursing practice threaten the status quo.
They challenge the myth that nurses are simply passive handmaidens or angels who don't need a degree.
Nursing is a self-governing & rapidly advancing profession. Let's talk about it.

I think it's important that members see what has been said, know how their membership fees are being spent and know that Dave indicated he hopes to resume his role as chair.

"No, I'm a physio"
"Can I see a doctor instead"
"Yes, but it will be 3-4 weeks"
Doctor in 3-4 weeks
"I'm going to refer you to the physio, this isn't my area of expertise"
Seeing a medical doctor in general practice means you are less likely to attend the Emergency Department.

You and your family deserve the highest quality care.

I've just seen an RN praising a TRAINEE nursing associate for leading a shift on PICU due to staffing issues.
Not sharing as it will invite a pile-on (it's being escalated) but this is completely unsafe & not something to tweet proudly. The poor TNA put in that situation!

I think it's important to understand the upset that comments like these generate for women. That's why we have such high standards of conduct in nursing - to maintain an important trust. It's not up to us to police how upsetting people find these words, but to maintain the trust.
Hiding in plain sight is horribly accurate.
Russell Brand was telling the world who he was and the world just clapped along, making it virtually impossible for victims to raise any concerns about his conduct.
#Dispatches
@MichaelGLFlood
@datepsych
I'll bet the above research doesn't account for the fact that claiming to be feminist actually means nothing at all. Lots of left wing men say they're feminist and curiously behave exactly like their non feminist peers. Often worse, but hiding behind the right words.
Interviewed for a B6 post today & got an offer an hour later!
More details to follow once formalised but...!!! I can't believe it. Such lovely & encouraging feedback, I'm really looking forward to working with this team 😍
Now to fight off the impostor syndrome.
I just want to speak up for the students & registered nurses who don't feel brave or heroic.
The language of war is everywhere but unlike soldiers, nobody in healthcare signed up for this.
It's OK to feel angry or scared. Please don't hold it in; speak to someone you trust.
A pandemic, 2 jobs, several stints of homeschooling, a leave of absence, sickness during write up and many late nights later... It is done.
Beyond proud of myself for this one.
As promised, here's a thread containing my slides from last night's
@RCNScot
event in which I spoke about
#MenInNursing
recruitment campaigns.
I talked about the context of these campaigns, critiqued the research that underpins them and addressed the implications for women. 🧵⬇️
The worst thing about being a mental health nurse is never the people, staff, pay or hours. It's the endless fight against systems that seem intent on making people homeless, poor & traumatised.
Time that should be spent helping people to progress, rather than simply survive.
Come now
@theRCN
council - this isn't
#FairPayforNursing
at all.
Nurses will continue to leave, patient care & safety will continue to suffer.
This is a real terms pay cut & nobody should vote in favour of that. Least of all an already undervalued & mostly female workforce.
Nurses are urged to vote in favour of a 5% pay rise for next year.
They will also get a one-off payment worth between £1,655 and £3,789 for this year.
What do you think?
@abi_carey
A large number of women are survivors of sexual violence. It's good practice to ask women, therefore, about their preferences. A lot of research, including my own, highlights this as important.
As for men, I see no reason not to ask. But this is a false equivalence.
Tomorrow I start my new role as a gender based violence nurse, an area of work I care a great deal about. I'm feeling very grateful this evening to have been given the opportunity to do something I love. I hope I do a good job, I hope I make a difference.
Wish me luck!
@thegradmedic
I just feel like the girls already have a hard enough time setting boundaries with boys at this age and now we've added some school endorsed complexity. They don't really understand it...
@LeahFHardy
@theRCN
I'm so sorry Leah. We need a zero tolerance approach toward this sort of behaviour to maintain trust from the public - the RCN has been doing a lot of work to be transparent about these issues and shift this culture in their own ranks. I am hopeful that sunlight will mean change.

This is offensive to people with mental health diagnoses and a completely ridiculous suggestion.
There were 35000 incidences of sexual violence in the NHS in the last 5 years, an overwhelmingly male crime. Yet no suggestion we start screening male staff for misogynistic views.
@alexbrechin
@devisridhar
Hi, Scottish nurse here. Lots of nurses and doctors posting in the UK about this but often the abuse is so vile that they remove the post within 24h and others think twice as a result. When my colleagues speak of the deaths they witness, they get threats & told they're lying...
Nurses are people with private lives and a right to make decisions about their appearance.
This is less about professionalism and more about archaic notions of nurses as white, childless and virginal women of God.
The people who care for us are skilled professionals. Not nuns.
Do tattoos, piercings, or dyed hair make nurses less professional?
Some nurses have found it an issue at work, but many say compliments outweigh negative comments.
Find out more about the official uniform guidance and what is deemed ‘inappropriate’.
@HumzaYousaf
This is still below inflation, still a real-terms pay cut and won't retain staff. The consequences of this for patient safety are significant.
This is not positive news for anyone. I hope members of the RCN hold the line.

So that's that! 3 years spent working toward this moment & the first thing I do is change my Twitter bio 😂
It's been a long road with amazing memories & challenging experiences. I'm glad to be finally be here, as a registered nurse.
Today is our 10 year wedding anniversary and exactly 16 years of being together.
There's no other man in the world I would tolerate for that length of time and who, let's face it, would tolerate me too 😂
Cheers to us!

It will be strange not to introduce myself as a student!
Any tips from
#NurseTwitter
for a nervous NQN?
Female nurses have the highest suicide risk of any healthcare professional.
Nursing is a low resource, high demand profession with poor pay, conditions and respect.
Female nurses are also more likely to suffer domestic violence at home & sexual harassment at work.
Extremely proud this
#InternationalWomensDay
to be a nurse leading an NHS service dedicated to ending violence against women and girls.
Male violence is the leading contributor to death, disease & disability in women aged 18-44.
The NHS can & should work to change this.
@YehudisG
I completely agree. It's so so important to prevent retraumatising or adding additional trauma to survivors. Nurses have a huge responsibility to get this right. Many of us are working on improving this and putting survivors at the heart of that work ❤️
A common question that people ask is why victims don't leave their abusers. There are many complex reasons, but self doubt is a common factor - is it really abuse? Am I actually the problematic one?
These doubts are often the result of gaslighting. Blame becomes self blame.
There's no "sick note culture" only a culture that expects high levels of productivity for low wages & for people to mindlessly grind away as their standards of living & health decline due to the increasingly unaffordable cost of living.
Where is the room for good mental health?
NEW: Updated pay offer from ScotGov via
@RCNScot
I suspect, if put to a vote, this offer will be accepted.
But it's worth pointing out that higher bands with more skill, experience & qualifications are being offered less of an increase by %. That's who we need to retain.
Not off to a great start with 46% being men in a 90% female profession. Fingers crossed this is rectified over the remaining 60 nurses.
Men are not more impactful in nursing than women. Such an insult.
From this evening's
@theRCN

to help identify risk.
In 2011 the conservative government cut university places for nursing.
In 2017 they abolished the bursary.
In 2017 Band 4 Nursing Associates were piloted & they are increasingly expected to do the same job for less.
The current nursing shortage has been manufactured.
@ShaunLintern
@credland_nicki
Very similar with PAs (originally) I would say.
The question is why aren’t there enough nurses - not training enough or failing to retain them?
@andrewallergy
I can see why men would be worried to be unfairly associated. I think the best answer to that is a zero tolerance approach to behaviours like this.
Nursing is not a vocation. It is a highly skilled graduate profession. It is a risk oriented & patient safety focused profession.
But because it is a majority female profession, nurses' skills are devalued & they're not paid fairly for these skills.
Hence 40,000+ vacancies.
Are nurses paid enough?
Cabinet minister Chris Heaton-Harris tells
@KayBurley
: “That’s very difficult to judge… it’s a vocation, I suppose you could say politics is a vocation in many ways”

I've lost two babies since having my daughters. They'd be 8 & 9 years old now.
During both I continued to plan birthday parties, bake elaborate cakes, work, fold the laundry...
The lives of women hold such ordinary, unseen suffering and quiet desperation.
#BLAW2023
#BabyLoss
My daughter was choked & threatened by a boy at school for defending her trans friend when he was deliberately deadnamed.
Where there's transphobia, misogyny is always close by. Boys internalise the free pass to abuse as kids and weaponise it as adults.
Suella Braverman is now encouraging children to misgender their trans peers and undermining schools who wish to treat them with respect. Quite, quite wicked.
Nurses perform important roles, but...
This is comparing apples with oranges. A nursing degree makes a safe and competent nurse. A medical degree makes a safe and competent doctor. One is not superior - they are entirely different, hence doctors cannot replace nurses 🤷♀️
Other NHS professionals perform immensely important roles too, whether nurses, paramedics, healthcare assistants, radiographers, dieticians, porters, everyone.
But a medical degree is what ensures a doctor has the vast background knowledge necessary for their safe practice.
If you have a clinical doctorate, you have earned the right to use the prefix "Dr".
If you are working at consultant level as a HCP, you have earned the right to use the title.
Your profession should be clear, particularly to patients, but not a barrier to using earned titles.
@SteveinChippers
@flaminhaystacks
@ellieokwilson
97% of women are sexually harassed. At least 1/3 are victims of domestic abuse or sexual violence and this is likely an underestimate. I wouldn't call that "no problems what so ever".
Are you committed to thinking we can't prevent male violence without curbing women's freedoms?
@GilmoreJNurse
@CraigDavidson85
@PDarbyshire
Under schedule 9 of the Equalities Act, certain services are able to advertise for female applicants only and the forensic medical services bill also allows women to select the sex of their examiner. It's clearly more complex, since these laws guard against discrimination.

I'm disappointed that this is the moment our CNOs have chosen to intervene. There should instead be a letter to our governments, warning them of the grave risks to life & safety if we continue to hemmorhage nursing staff.
We shouldn't have to strike at all.

Actually, we do precisely this in the VAWG sector under sch 9 (part 1) of the Equality Act 2010
The act allows for exclusions that are a proportionate means to achieve a legitimate aim
We can exclude all men, on this basis, from working with survivors of sexual violence 1/8
Nicola Sturgeon's core point from today's Q&A, on the trans prisons row - "there is no other group in society where we accept that the actions of an individual somehow forms a justification for taking away rights from the whole group, or not according rights to that group"
This is an insult to the knowledge, skill and experience of both doctors and nurses.
Why wait for a GP appt or sit for hours in A&E when you could just.. Self-refer based on doing a bit of googling. Amazing.

Gaslighting isn't limited to 1:1 interactions.
Collective gaslighting is when some members of a group harass, mistreat & abuse a person while the rest of the group collude by denying it happens & minimising/justifying it.
It can happen in personal or professional groups.
Nursing is a fantastic career, but it's not valued or paid fairly.
Nurses are the vast majority of Band 5s. Over 60% experience sexual harassment. Female nurse suicide rates are higher than any other HCP.
We don't need more routes into nursing. We need systemic change.
Latest UCAS data shows applications for nursing degrees has collapsed by 26% in two years.
Why do you think a career as a nurse is becoming less popular?
How can nursing appeal to more students?
This girl, whose worst GCSE result was in maths, just smashed her masters level statistics module with a shocker of a grade 🎉
I never talk grades, but this one deserves a special shout out because I prayed only to pass.

Her home was a 2nd home to me growing up. I spend most weekends there, called in after school... I was there when they announced the death of Diana & we stood & watched 9/11 unfold on the news together.
