Just imagine a Google Sheet with an entire column of pitcher ERAs rounded to tenths. I know it’s mathematically fine, but I’d still start doubting the integrity of the spreadsheet, the person who made it, and possibly the concept of data itself.

You can say you have a “3.2” ERA out loud vocally.. but you can’t write it down without taking a thought-provoking pause and questioning if that missing digit had language significance you’d been ignoring until now. And it only becomes apparent once you see it written like that

Reading ERA with one decimal is deeply unpleasant. It’s not impactful to round in any way — that last digit is effectively useless — but something about 3.2 instead of 3.24 just feels wrong.

That same week, Aaron Nola made his MLB debut, and outside of Carlos Rodón, no other pitcher from that draft class had even thrown a big-league pitch to that point. He went on to start a full season for the Reds (172 innings) — and unfortunately, that was mostly it. This was

The idea that there’s so much out of your control in the playoffs, and it really is just the flip of an ever-so-slightly weighted coin?
