Just imagine a Google Sheet with an entire column of pitcher ERAs rounded to tenths. I know it’s mathematically fine, but I’d still start doubting the integrity of the spreadsheet, the person who made it, and possibly the concept of data itself.

You can say you have a “3.2” ERA out loud vocally.. but you can’t write it down without taking a thought-provoking pause and questioning if that missing digit had language significance you’d been ignoring until now. And it only becomes apparent once you see it written like that

Reading ERA with one decimal is deeply unpleasant. It’s not impactful to round in any way — that last digit is effectively useless — but something about 3.2 instead of 3.24 just feels wrong.

As an unrelated side note, nichely hilarious that the Reds graphic introducing Brandon Finnegan to their viewers listed: -Played in both the College and MLB World Series the same year - "Traded for Johnny Cueto” - “Left Handed Pitcher” The narrative importance balance there is

That same week, Aaron Nola made his MLB debut, and outside of Carlos Rodón, no other pitcher from that draft class had even thrown a big-league pitch to that point. He went on to start a full season for the Reds (172 innings) — and unfortunately, that was mostly it. This was

Gonna squeeze an 8th in here by using batters faced instead of innings pitched, because the most extreme example of this enters the dataset: Brandon Finnegan (2014, Royals). Only 8 players have done this during their "debut" season... Finnegan did this in the same season he was

@tangotiger I know that this is the case, but do you think this type of thinking makes it less enjoyable as a fan, or even as a player? The idea that there’s so much out of your control in the playoffs, and it really is just the flip of an ever-so-slightly weighted coin?

The Brewers might only have one clear top-25 pitcher (Peralta) and maybe no top-25 position players. But half their lineup probably sits in the 26–50 range, with a couple more who’d earn votes. They’re built like a Monopoly portfolio near Jail — no Boardwalks, no Park Place,

Obviously, this doesn't mean coaches can do good and bad jobs or that certain hires were shit or you overfit to a situation where the coach just was more or less "there" and paid for it later. It simply means when you reset your chips -- you can say whatever about a guy getting

So when a program cuts a $60 million buyout check, that’s not the system breaking — that is the system. If you win, you pay. If you lose, you pay to reset. You’re just watching variance, leverage, and market reality collide in public.
