in SVAC hearing this morning to Dr. Patricia Hastings, chief consultant, post-deployment health.
She spent 33 years in the Army, retired a colonel.
If you had the opportunity to travel (cheaply) all by your lonesome somewhere for about 10 days in January--to plant yourself and either work remotely or get going on that new book--where would you go?
Kate Thomas can't be here to say it, so I will: If you're a woman who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, go get your mammogram. Tell your healthcare provider about your potential exposure to the burn pits, and ask for it.
Bunch of bikers in combat-vet leathers.
I talk to them, cuz vets, and ask a dude which war.
“Desert Storm,” he says. “You can tell by the beer gut and gray hair.”
“Oh,” I say. “Uh. Me, too.”
FFS. Having PTS doesn’t send you into bars shooting kids. Ever. So many of us served, so many of us deal/t with combat stress, and some of us are angry assholes who can’t act appropriately—sort of like the general population.
Y’all.
Trump has folks booing the media covering the VFW convention.
Has anyone met the reporters who cover veterans’ issues?

You won’t meet a group that cares more about its subject matter.
My co-author, who shall not be named, and I should soon be through Pentagon pre-pub review of the book about the unit that shall also not be named…
‘It's Jason Bourne Shit’: How the US Killed the Leader of Al Qaeda
We’ve got a bunch of 30-year Desert Storm coverage planned, because here’s what I remember: They thought 10,000 of us were going to die in the first week, and no lie, I was terrified. We all were, even with the usual bravado.

Just out from VA Sec McDonough: “We at VA are ready to deliver for Veterans as soon as this bill is signed into law. Vets and survivors have already waited too long for the health care and benefits they’ve earned...
Anyone know of any women who were unofficially snipers in the U.S. military? Like they didn't go through training, but sort of ended up in that role? DM or kelly.kennedy

Oh FFS. When will people understand the difference between an editorial board and a reporter? Lemme know if you need a beer. Also, asshats. What reporter doesn't grouse about having to cover Trump's tweets? Also, the up-the-nose angle? Not your best side :D
The War Horse News is a nonprofit military/veterans-issues newsroom--we're like the Propublica of military-related news.
Which means, editor-types, that you can steal our stuff: Full stories, photos, headlines, all of it.
“Hundreds of thousands of Vietnam War era veterans and survivors also stand to benefit from the legislation. The bill adds hypertension, or high blood pressure, as a presumptive disease associated with Agent Orange exposure.”
Please check out . We write military and veteran news for a civilian audience, and we're like ProPublica, so any editor can steal our stuff. Why is that important? DoD has the nation's biggest budget, for one.
If you’re looking for books for the new year, “Fight Like a Girl” and 0They Fought for Each Other” both made the list—as did books by several friends

Incredibly proud of Brennan for this. He documents how early the Marines knew Thae Ohu was not well, and that they pursued an "attempted murder" charge against her even as the alleged victim fights for Ohu's freedom.
I'm moderating a panel tomorrow for PBS's American Veteran. I've been a fangirl of Shoshana Johnson for forevah, and Mitcheline BigMan's reception from her family made me full on cry. Edie Meeks? Hero. She made sure the rest of us got a chance. Shain Brendan? Fun.
Have been thinking about this a lot going into the new year: We vets have a long history of asshole behavior, often racist or antisemitic, too. Would love to hear about groups actively working against it this time around, cuz we shouldn’t be the problem.
Y’all.
“Others around the campfire too agree with the conspiracy myth that the outbreak of war in Europe is an attempt to divert attention away from this trucker convoy, which is currently about a couple hundred people parked in the desert”
VA changed its mission statement from all of those hes and hims: “To fulfill President Lincoln's promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors’’

Dear readers,
Veterans and active-duty service members had a prominent role in last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol, through vitriolic rhetoric and the violent acts those words incited.
One year ago today, I started

Y’all—they got me a cake, and this time it was a reward for staying, rather than leaving!
I was editing until 11 last night, and I still love this job so much—the mission and the people.
Thanks for the opportunity, Thomas Brennan!
Unreal. You’d think “professionals” would behave better. (The first crew did.) As a Woman Serving Alongside Green Berets, I Had No Problem Keeping Up. It Wasn’t Enough.

Thinking about Kate and Alex and an awful lot of other folks I’ve met over the years. Thanks,
@jonstewart
, for amplifying it, and
@danclare
for caring enough about your people to leak it back in 2008 when it could have cost you. That’s some hero shit. Cheers.
This makes me want to weep. In 2008, a PAO leaked a doc to us about the burn pits while I was

"Numbers for breast cancer in military women have been high for years, but as veterans returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, rumors began to swirl: The cancers are hitting young—and they’re extraordinarily aggressive.
I have news:
Friday will be my last day at The War Horse.
I'm going to write books. I'm also available for some side-gig work cuz a woman's gotta eat.

I was at a wedding in Spain, so I missed this. But holy crap.

They took on the wrong woman: Anyone who knows her knows her word is good. "Ex-VA official claims refusal to discredit female veteran who complained of sex assault led to his firing"
I missed my dad. He deployed two months prior and was set to return just after Christmas. I missed the smell of his Barbasol shaving cream lather. I missed him steering with his knees, convincing me the wheel of his 1992 Chevy Silverado moved by magic.
I'm back at work
@thewarhorsenews
today. $6,600 in small donations in about three days--y'all know how to make a reporter's crusty ol' heart mushy. It's impossible to say how much of a morale boost that was, so thank you. Lights on.
Spent some time at Balad, as well as other fab places in Iraq/Afghanistan, as a reporter. Broke the burn pit story.
And now, just cuz the universe likes to play, I have asthma.
But, I'm also a Desert Storm vet. Yay me! Guess it's time to (finally) sign up...
You, too. Do it.
“I love
@TheWarHorseNews
because it’s a lot of people that have served and train people who have actually experienced the military. The media are often excited to embed, but coverage focuses on sensationalized aspects, and not daily challenges and sacrifices faced.” -

"From fiscal year 2000 to fiscal year 2015, Veterans Affairs saw the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer increase by five times for women ages 45 to 64—or 3% of Veterans Health Administration patients in this age group—by fiscal year 2015, according to a VA report."
My guys? They’re dealing with all of it. Hardest hit battalion since Vietnam, and now it’s their lungs. Weird cancers. Worse, they expect it.
They felt deserted when folks didn’t know a damned thing about Iraq in 2007.
Why would they feel different now?
In an eleventh-hour act of cowardice, Republicans chose today to rob generations of toxic-exposed veterans across this country of the health care and benefits they've earned and so desperately need.
Make no mistake—the American people are sick and tired of these games.
