So important. Some feel starting with pain to explain suicide is vague rather than mechanistic. But reinforcement and punishment are basic mechanisms. If life is painful/aversive/miserable, then life itself is being punished, and there will be a powerful instinct to make it stop.
Some SCS items were better than others. These were the two “best”: -“It is unbearable when I get this upset” -“I can’t imagine anyone being able to withstand this kind of pain”. /7
