Our new @nberpubs wp links experimentally measured #altruism of physicians to their industry payments and drugs prescribed. We find that non-altruistic docs both receive higher payments and more likely to respond by increasing branded drug prescribing than altruistic docs.

Our study sheds light on the impact of marketing encounters between drug companies and physicians on efficiency in healthcare spending and patient health, particularly in cancer care treatments w/ high prices and potentially small survival benefits.

We find physicians expand the drug treatment to healthier patients after marketing encounter, with no improvement in overall patient mortality. Our estimates can not reject INCREASES in patient mortality.

We find that initiation of financial relations leads to an increase in Part B cancer drug expenditure of about 4%, though the effect fades in about a year. This translates to a rate of return of over 800% on marketing encounters for cancer drug companies.
