The real question is why someone has not come up with an auto-login for zoom conferences.
Like, how hard would it be to have zoom boot that bad boy up whilst you are otherwise engaged in life?
Hey Med Students/ Residents -
Is $5,000 enough for a relocation loan between med school and residency?
If not - what is the “bare bones” amount that makes sense?
@olsonplanner
1. As others have said - this is not acceptable.
2. Screenshot the tweet to document it.
3. Report it to ERAS with the tweet screenshot.
4. If ERAS refuses to do anything, report to the Institution’s DIO
5. Happy to talk to the applicant if they have questions - DMs open
For my anesthesia peeps - if you are going to have command of airway control, you can’t be limited.
You will be glad you know how to use different blades when you are by yourself, at night, in the PACU with only one type of blade, and a crumping patient. (this happened to me)
Hot take:
I cringe when people tell medical trainees learning how to intubate…
“You really only need to get good with one type of blade while intubating… I am a Mac person.”
If you intubate, you should be able to use every type of blade. Full stop.

Congratulations!
Besides the typical snack foods, what else do you like to put in college vending machines? There has got to be some high yield things out there.

Congratulations on making a difficult decision, Dr. Menotto. Lean on the community of us physicians who understand.
My DM’s are open if you have financial questions you would like to talk through as you make the transition to your next chapter.

What if … just hear me out … part of the decedent’s wishes were to have a reading of the will and required the beneficiaries dress like a character from Pirates of the Caribbean? 🏴☠️
I know you are not a fan of the “hand from the grave” … but you have to admit it would be 🔥

I don’t know the specific program, but these types of letters are typically sent out when a program closes.
This might have saved you from Matching to a program that was going to be closed.
@olsonplanner
Float it out -
1- run dishwasher
2- fill the other side of the sink full of water.
3- when the dishwasher empties, release the other sink drain to fill the common drain
4- this may overwhelm the drain and the dishwasher draining may float the lid out
I don’t know who needs this.
Did you give up on yourself?
There are people in your life that know and love you - they have not given up on you.
You need you.
They need you.
The world needs you.
Get to it. Make it happen.

The Ohio State Uni maternity ward was next to the football stadium.
When a patient went into labor, the nurses hung a sheet out the window to summon the OB to return to the hospital to deliver the patient.

Great time to start investing -
1. Everything is on sale
2. They didn't lose much
3. They may be less likely to bail when the next one comes and they have 💰 invested because they will remember the bounce back.

I echo what others have said about quicksand … it was such a prevalent trope in TV and movies that I really thought it would be bigger problem.

Surely you have seen the website … I first thought it satirical website, then I realized it was for real. Read an article about how to keep from mixing up your jobs by using different browser types and color coding work spaces. 🤪

Good points made below. I would also add 🚩 "This is the same contact everyone signs. Don't waste your $ on a contract laywer.". 🚩ALWAYS have an attorney who specializes in physician contracts review the contract.

Eye injuries were common enough to be specifically written into the articles of agreement, along with losing a hand or foot. Yes -pirates had disability policies that paid an amount based on the injury. (2 your point - Most patches were used to protect night vision)
@FilledWithMoney
Depends what you are optimizing for … there are a lot of factors that have been left out of that equation on both sides.
- Time - PTO and time spent at work vs control over your schedule
- Benefits - which cost $
- Stress or lack thereof.
- Enjoyment in what you do
@hugosays
@olsonplanner
You are correct about filing. The specific reason for med students to file a tax return is to provide an AGI for the income driven repayment (IDR) system. A $0 AGI provides newly minted doctors with 12+ months of $0 payments towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
@TheMoneyAvenger
Congratulations! great problem to have.
Your options -
1. Pull out excess contributions, and place in a Trad IRA - then do a Backdoor Roth with that $.
(Watch out for the pro-rata rule)
2. ⬇️ your AGI by contributing to a 401k, HSA, or donating $,
For 2023 - Backdoor Roth

Be honest. This is a “getting to know you” question. A variation on this question for resident applicants is “if you couldn’t do [speciality] what would you do?” When do you answer, follow up immediately with the “why” Now we are all curious … what would you do and why?

Disappointing the FB group only wants to talk about comfortable subjects.

Former PD here. We encourage our pedi anesthesiology fellows to take the month of July off to move, study for the boards and rest ... then start in August. We are able to do this b/c we do not use our fellows as a labor pool ... They are with us for a year to learn.

I have interviewed applicants for med school, residency, fellowship, and attending positions. I always thought it was weird when they apologized for not having a family member in medicine. Now I know where the unnecessary apologies come from - meaningless small talk.
@Nina_Mrkdo
It can be an overwhelming event. Tons of lectures going on all at the same time, on topics you want see.
- Check out the resident section - they have res specific lectures
- Go to the med student meet&greet
- Map out the lectures you want to attend
- Cafe Du Monde!
Please let your MS4 friends know this is happening!
I feel honored to “share the stage” with this lineup of speakers. Tyler put together a fantastic lineup for this event.
@thejenevieve
Human residency is certainly a strange place to be for Residents. They are an employee and also a trainee (sometimes the employee different than the institution that trains them.)
Usually physicians are given a relo/signing bonus when they get their “real” job after training.

I would invest all the $100k in the market as opposed to Dollar Cost Averaging.
The modeling around this has been consistent that IF you have a lump sum of money to invest THEN investing it all at once will provide better returns long term than Dollar Cost Averaging.

Totally - it also doesn’t help that the “spot” was planned for 3-5min and he is having to educate what a RMD is.
He kept saying “Required Minimum Distribution” or “RMD” hoping it would mean something to them. That’s a tough spot to be in.

So sorry.
Your sister and her kids are so blessed to have your family in lives.
B/c you asked -
1. Grief counseling would be helpful for your new family.
2. You may consider reviewing your estate plan with your family change and special needs trust might be appropriate.

It sure adds up quickly when you are bridging that gap between med school loan dispersement and the 1st paycheck as a resident.

Having that 4% of jerks just shows you have an adequate sample size. It’s like the stuff on Amazon that only has 5 star reviews … not enough people have voted.
Now you can proudly tell your group you are taking off a day week based on “the data”.

Unfortunately, a company (who shall not be named and who is not on the list) is a common lecturer at residency programs. Program Directors, please be careful who you let have access to your residents.

2. not speaking up when the slide was presented.
3. not apologizing.

Want to know why physicians take issue with the “value” of financial “professionals”? We have been TARGETED by an industry who preys upon those of us who TRUST other professionals to do what is in the best interests of the patient/client.

1. Most anesthesiology residency programs are non-profit and would qualify for PSLF. That’s at least 4 years of reduced payments - maybe more if you complete a fellowship.
2. You will mostly find non-profits in academics … a few in private practice, but rare.

I never thought I would have to say this …. Don’t go into student loan forbearance so you can afford whole life insurance. This is right up there with sticking a fork in an electric plug.
A resident I spoke with this morning met with an insurance saleperson who is recommending they manually apply for forbearance on their loans after May 1.
Why?
To direct maximum funds to a...wait for it...
whole life insurance policy!
This is a bad idea for so many reasons!😡
@residencyreview

Sorry you had to deal with garbage.

Absolutely.
Being nice to someone is for your benefit. Being kind to someone is for their benefit.
Both actions can look similar in the moment - it’s the expected outcome of the interaction that will show if they are being kind, or just being nice.

401 k provide a couple of advantages over a brokerage -
- asset protection - 401k plans are protected in most states
- tax advantages for contributions and growth.
I would also propose that a seasoned investor does not always equal a consistent investor.
Med Students - take advantage of this opportunity that is going live in one hour! Residents - tune in so you can help your PGY-1 joining your residnecy as well.
