"To those who say that in the sixth largest economy on Earth. we must first tolerate rising poverty in order to bring it down later, we have to reply: that is not economic realism, it is moral and political failure dressed up as pragmatism.". 🔥🔥🔥.
It really is not rocket science. If this Labour government is to rebuild the country, it must start with the scourge of poverty – in all its forms. There can be no credible definition of success that does not include its eradication as a central goal. To those who say that in.

The free market used to be touted as the cure for all our problems; now it’s taken to be the cause of them.

This is a great example of the complete mismatch between a classical or neoliberal view of organising scarce resources (allow "free market" price mechanism to allocate "optimally") and a modern political economy with renewed focus on public purpose and socially useful production.
Government policy is to grow the gambling industry. That means more addiction and more suicide. Time for a rethink. - @cleanupgambling.

This is why it is so self-defeating to insist that taxes "finance" gov spending. It leads you to the ridiculous conclusion that we need money from Jim Ratcliffe to hire a new nurse or buy a pylon. Real wealth cannot "leave the country". If billionaires move, let them.
“We need to make a decision as to whether we want millionaire’s cash to go into the Exchequer or not” . “We have given the literal assets of this country to very, very, very wealthy people”. Journalist Camilla Tominey and economist Gary Stevenson debate taxing wealth. #bbcqt

I do wish the discourse on this issue would stop framing it as "oh, if only we'd developed our capital stock when the BoE chose to hold policy rates down. Now they've increased them, it's too damn late!". As if our real capacity to build out infrastructure is somehow less now.
Kind of wild but. decisions made by Tories 2010-16 on public investment - and choosing fiscal conservatism over building things with ultra cheap credit - probably condemns Britain to a very bad 21st century. We tried folks! Our institutionally stupid media cheered it all.
