One of the most ominous risks for Europe is that of a major change in Atlantic ocean currents. Recent science suggests it has been greatly underestimated in the past -including by me, having worked on it for over 30 years. Here my half-hour presentation in Vilnius a week ago!

If someone tells you the CO2 is coming out of the sea, they try to fool you. We know where it comes from and where it goes. We emit CO2, about half of that stays in the atmosphere, and a quarter each is taken up by oceans and forests. Measured facts! https://t.co/9m0bp1p5K1

How likely is an #AMOC shutdown? Here's our latest study based on 768 runs with 38 standard climate models (the CMIP6 models). Note these do not include any meltwater from Greenland mass loss, so might underestimate the risk a bit. 2/2 https://t.co/af1PkR2GTp

Collapse of key Atlantic current could bring extreme drought to Europe for centuries, study finds. That's an under-appreciated impact of an #AMOC shutdown, of particular concern given the recent results showing much higher likelihood of this. 1/2 https://t.co/thkGepMJIQ

And, of course, every US state except Alaska gets more sun than Germany. Don’t fall for the fossil-fuel propaganda broadcaster Fox News claiming that solar works here because “Germany has lots more sun”. Solar works almost everywhere. https://t.co/Mw0tfxrG8E

Great podcast explaining to Americans how “balcony solar” took off in Europe, with millions in Germany 🇩🇪 alone now harvesting solar power with these panels that you just take home and plug in, and they pay back their price within a few years:
volts.wtf
Cora Stryker joins me to explain how "plug-in" solar took Europe by storm and is finally, via Utah (?), making its way to America.

One of the reasons why an #AMOC shutdown “cannot be considered a low likelihood risk anymore” is this study: https://t.co/af1PkR2GTp And if you want to know more what this is about, watch my short presentation here:

Iceland is right to consider this an existential threat. https://t.co/FHWRUDmWb8

A sub-field of science looks at whether Atlantic ocean circulation #AMOC has weakened. Direct measurements suggest yes but only started in 2004. So people look at temperature and salinity data. A new study finds a robust slowdown fingerprint at mid-depth.

When a government speaks responsibly about climate risks. Iceland's climate minister: "We believe that confronting climate tipping points and the risks they pose openly is not a sign of 'pessimism' or 'alarmism' but a sign of realism and responsibility." https://t.co/dTua5sY3ju

“… because ignoring systemic risk is unacceptable!” Iceland’s climate minister in Belém on the risk of major #AMOC changes. “Prevention remains our first duty.” Listen to him & me & others here: https://t.co/WHzF7yOPuz The first 2 mins show how the live stream was ended by a 🔥.

This has to be said. No credible scientist thinks the planet is heading into an ice age. Here’s the real story. Global warming and melting Greenland Ice threatens collapsing the vital Atlantic circulation called the AMOC (timetable uncertain, but there’s some chance it starts

Hey Murdoch fake-news media! The study you report on here 1. Predicts nothing but is about the past. 2. Is not about Gulf Stream but #AMOC. 3. An AMOC collapse wouldn’t cause an Ice Age. Incompetence or intent? The study by Ren shows AMOC has weakened: https://t.co/tXUVbCiE6L

Iceland now considers this a national security threat. https://t.co/fckxDy5eqy And the Foreign Intelligence Service of Germany together with other German institutions published a National Climate Risk Assessment this year. Here is what it says about #AMOC tipping risk.

Is the Atlantic Ocean circulation close to tipping? Hear the latest science as I presented it last month at the ATLAS25 event in Helsinki. Let me know if anything is unclear or if you see good reasons why your government shouldn't immediately act on this. https://t.co/jyJ2xf2qjC

All nations committed under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degC for good reason. Instead many governments are beholden to the fossil fuel lobby and even subsidize fossil fuel use with your money. We’re now at 1.4 degC & emissions are rising not falling.
