Analysis by Land App showing where 4,520 CS Mid-Tier farm environmental schemes covering >51,000ha arable land expire on 31st Dec due to government’s suspension of SFI. Decades of taxpayer investment in nature to be erased while ministers ponder. https://t.co/zuXsK9bMsZ

Since it's conference season, here's a scene from the 2023 @NFUtweets conference when @Keir_Starmer came into the press room after addressing farmers at the conference. Here's a brief reminder of what he told farmers - enjoy 🧵(1/7)

With badgers already proven to have TB on their land, I guess it was just a matter of time. Devastating news, but something that's mirrored throughout the farming community day-in, day-out. Badgers need controlling, it's as simple as that.

We’re in the same boat Tom, heard nothing from @Ruralpay on any hint of roll over, fallow plots for #lapwing, #skylark plots, rare arable flower margins, wild birds food mix, pollen and nectar etc- all under threat of going. 25years of stewardship 🤯
For 1st time in c15 years we’re not going to be paid for overwinter bird food and shelter. CS ag’ment comes to an end Dec’25 & @DefraGovUK has ended SFI. So should we take it back to arable rotation or plant & nurture it unfunded? Need to plan the autumn/winter work

Why? Because it’s about protecting the job of one person over the generations of livelihoods and hard graft of tens of thousands who day in day out produce your food. 👇
Ask yourselves WHY @RachelReevesMP has refused to meet farmers, the NFU, CLA, EXPERTS for NINE long months since her DISASTROUS budget. She knows the #familyfarmtax AND #familyfirmtax is morally reprehensible. And she KNOWS when quizzed, projected figures WILL FALL DOWN. 1/2

Absolute rubbish @SteveReedMP You slashed the delinked payments last year by 76 % and have capped this years payment at £600. The SFI is now a shadow of its former self to new applicants, taxed pick up trucks and fertiliser, increased NI, got rid of the market for 2m tons of
'This government is supporting farmers with more investment' 'You broke a pledge to them!' Katherine Forster asks Steve Reed about what the NFU has called farmers' 'torment with worry' due to government policy.

70% of UK land is farmed. If we want nature to recover, this is where it happens. Farmers like @herdyshepherd1 are already doing it – farming with wildlife, not against it. But without proper funding, we risk losing it all. @RachelReevesMP: increase funding, grow our future.

Unhelpfully for UK farmers - and the Prime Minister - the USA says at the ongoing press conference that the trade deal will "exponentially increase export of US beef" to the UK.

I’m really struggling with the idea that some of us are meant to deliver net zero by changing our healthy diets whilst others are building airports and roads and emissions heavy infrastructure That’s not a deal I’m signing up to - and neither is anyone else, as far as I can see
The problem really is this bit though…. Because the maths is based on assumptions and models that don’t reflect the realities of farming practice and land use.

Just how stupid do you need to be to not understand that people that “do not make any money” can’t afford to pay more taxes ? How about we pay our tax based on a % of income and profit like everyone else does ? ……. now there’s a novel idea
🚨🚨 Defra Secretary Steve Reed says 'people are focusing on the wrong thing if they think Inheritance Tax is the problem'. ❌ 🗣️ "You have people who work all the hours God sends, and yet they do not make any money." READ MORE 🔗 https://t.co/qNSGeYyzmE

We also ate about 80,000 tonnes of beef in December Demand up Prices up I remember going to an event at the COOP and all the retail ‘experts’ said plant based substitutes were the growth trend for the future They’ve gone very quiet - it crashed

And so it starts. @AngelaRayner ‘s wet dream. I’ve lost 80 acres of rented ground to new houses and associated BNG, and now I’m told I’m going to lose another 22 acres within the next three years. All very good quality farmland, producing high yields. @CLAtweets @NFUtweets

In 2023, Keir Starmer promised ‘a new relationship with the countryside.’ Yesterday, Labour’s Farming Minister revealed the truth. Farming isn’t a priority. Food security is at risk, and the countryside is being sidelined. The country deserves better. 🥀
