Why even buy packs, and hope to get the power you want? I’ll sharpie a Black Lotus for 1000$. For another 1000 I’ll spit on your face to make it feel even more like the Wotc experience. DMs open

The year is 2022. You’ve managed to win the first 3 rounds of the tournament before getting a card from your deck banned. A new record. You normally carry 12 decks with you to each tournament. Round 4 your sideboard gets banned just as you finish game 1. You love the uncertainty!
Here's the MonoU list and sb plans I got to Mythic 1 with. Will probably post a more detailed guide for subscribers in the next couple days.
@arenadecklists
I once went to a store that a friend of mine convinced me to play at for an FNM. Round 4 at 3-0 my Boros aggro opponent has 6 creatures or so when I slam down my promo textless wrath
“What does that card do?” He asks
“Destroys all your creatures”
“No, really, what does it do?”
I once called a judge for the oracle text of my own card. I couldn’t remember the order of Cryptic Command and it was relevant during the game.
My opponent and the judge found it hilarious.
It is one of the most memorable moments for me even though it was long ago.
One of the financially stupidest things I did in Magic was to NOT cheat. If I cheated about 3 important matches a year I’d be a million dollars richer. If I been early enough maybe I’d have made a big Magic store or started a Hearthstone Esports team. Or be going to Worlds!
I’ve had many years where I came up short. I often think of all the mulligans and manascrew, or the small choices I could have made to win 1 more game
This time I’m choosing to feel proud of myself for a season where I top8ed a PT and won a GP while fighting a battle for my life
My mom: “How much money does the champion get?”
Me: “Not much, but they get their picture on a card”
Mom: “Oh then I definitely hope
@OndrejStrasky
wins, he’s the best looking”

Indestructible Gods got you down? Too many graveyard cards for your opponent to escape with? Look no further! Thanks to

You aren’t your last tournament
You aren’t the events you are qualified for
You aren’t how many viewers/followers/patrons you have
You aren’t your Magic results
You are a valuable human being
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk
I remember when you could win money playing Magic. Not as much as most other games, but at least enough to make you feel your time spent mastering the game wasn’t wasted. Adventures travelling the world and seeing your friends. I’ll always cherish those times.
Magic used to be so welcoming and fun. It’s gotten so toxic lately, seems like there’s some new type of battle online about something compleatly different every day. Why can’t we proliferate kindness instead of adding oil to the fires of online hate?
The doctor did everything he could. He tried surgically removing the small intestine. He tried restarting the heart. He tried steroids and opiates. Unfortunately nothing helped fix the paper cut on the patient’s hand, so he just shot him in the head and walked away. The end
11000 viewers for the silver showcase. I think if they put 150 000$ on a table, set packs of beta around it, and sat down all the platinum pros and streamed their faces as they lit it all on fire they could at least have hit 6 figures
Would be cool to take an unfortunate circumstance and try something awesome: Since matches are prerecorded, I would love to see the players commentate on their own matches. Instead of commentators guessing what is going on, we could find out the actual thought process
Due to the time zone differences between players, we have already begun to pre-record matches.
Play will continue and a recording will be made available for viewing at a later date.
No idea why people complain about masks, I had a lovely walk through the park today wearing mine, and children even managed to socially distance themselves!
Magic Pro Tip:
If you’re in a spot where you can win the game, or not win the game, use the option that wins the game. Unless you are playing Commander, then you need to min/max the option that is the most fun vs. the one that shows off the most secret lair cards
It is crazy to see how much money some of these people make. No way they do enough work for them to be earning this much. Sure, they are public figures and do spend a fair number of hours working, but making 1 billion dollars a week still seems too much for Bezos and Musk
I wonder if Wotc could have gotten a better sadness-to-dollar ratio than cutting T-shirt’s for first-time PT goers and Player Tokens for Platinums. Seems hard to top.
I feel bad for Play Design. They are only a few humans, they don’t have the internet to help them figure out new decks as quickly as millions of players worldwide. Like how did people figure out that 4 colours was right for this landfall deck so quickly?
Wizards is really underrated at marketing. If they had normal or good prizes for their cosplay contest at Magic30, I’d never have heard of it, but because it’s so abysmal it’s all everyone can talk about! Some real 3D chess on display here, and it’s their classic playbook too!
Bans are only a symptom of the problem. The problem is when untested and overpowered cards continually get printed. Those cards sell, but as you keep ratcheting things up, eventually you reap the consequences.
Can someone explain to me why competitive players are putting themselves through this? What I saw this weekend doesn’t glamourize the grind. What is the end goal? The time, money, effort seem like the worst EV possible.
Today is (sort of) Magic's 28th Birthday!!
so i want to share a rarely-seen letter from Richard Garfield to the 1993 gaming community regarding his new game—MAGIC: THE GATHERING
Pls give it a read, it's fascinating if you love MTG history:
(I added a short foreword for context)
Elemental? Check. Makes a ton of Plants? Check. Landfall grows them? Yes. Legendary? Yes, Commander fans! Avenger of Zendikar has a new friend, plus check out that promo art! Thanks Wizards for the awesome free preview!
Doesn’t it say something about the state of the world that there are 2 politicians who have been around for 50 years, one on the right side of basically every issue and the other on the opposite, and the latter one is winning? I feel sad for my American friends and for the world.
Sad for all the people losing their SCG income, the less interesting formats have been rough, but on the bright side Chris Cocks got the big job at Hasbro and corporate profits in the last quarter are at all time highs! Looking forward to what’s next!
Tomorrow will be the first Pro Tour equivalent event I haven’t played since my first one almost 13 years ago. Instead of feeling sad, I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I’ll always cherish my time as a Magic Pro, but I’m also happy to move on. Gl everyone!
I’d like to thank anyone who supported me along the way, who rooted for me or came to say hi. Anyone who I inspired to try and do better, be better (even if just at a game) and who was part of the great positives of this journey. Love all of you and wish the best in the future!
I can’t wait for Cosplay Companion, you have to be dressed up appropriately to play them. That would make live tournaments pretty fun. Imagine 1000 people in Bear costumes to get a free 2/2
I had this one friend. We had such great times, travelling together. But over time he began to change. He wouldn’t pay his share of our costs. He started wearing fancy new clothes, acting rude, and now had way more new friends. He stopped caring about me. Time for me to move on
Ah,
#MTGHoF
time. When people discuss how many great results excuse how much shadiness/cheating. For me, the line is simple. I don’t think thieves should be rewarded for having stolen more money. Clean players only for the Hall, even if they have 3 T8s vs other’s 5.
Commander was a perfect example of what was beautiful about Magic: a fan created format rewarding creativity and nostalgia and style. And now, like the rest of the game, it’s served pre-made: packaged like a freaking McDonald’s happy meal with Commander Set X in foil or full art.
This thread is the reality for most who try to engage in the pro system. I’m lucky enough to be among the few exceptions, but Jake’s experience is the rule.
Why am I quitting paper Magic?
I lost $4,469 (nice) dollars playing "professionally" over the last year.
That's a vacation to Europe, a TV wider than I am tall, or one of those expensive TikTok dogs.
All to play a Pro Tour, two RCs, and two MagicCons.
Here's a sobering 🧵:
Tournaments in 2022 will just be prizes to whoever’s Commander deck has the most sweet foils (only available through Secret Lair members-only purchases). I can’t wait!
@PVDDR
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand TRON. The fetching of the right TRON piece is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the lines will go over a typical player’s head.
Oftentimes people ask me how to get good at magic or how to get on the PT. I explain that there’s no quick fix, that there’s often years of practice and learning ahead. Now I’ll just tell them something different:
Cheat. Even if you get caught it doesn’t matter.

This is pretty absurd. I would have played if I had known. Not to get the invite-I already have that. But to feel something by looking into my opponents' eyes when I dreamcrushed them. Sad that they took that away from me
Sorry about a lack of stream this past week, my health has been worse than I’ve let on. Have some more appointments with doctors this week, hoping to be well enough to play the Invitational. Thanks to everyone who reached out, I appreciate you all.
It just seems like, with this, the PT “Yawgmoth’s Will cheat” player being allowed to play worlds, and no more visible list of cheaters anywhere that we continue to move to a point where there is no point in someone of integrity taking competitive Magic seriously. Just ban them!
Have you heard the story of a man going to ask the rabbi for help when his house was so full and noisy, and the rabbi suggests he let his goat stay inside for a week. When the goat is gone, he finds the house peaceful after all. Incidentally, Mtgo doesn’t seem so bad right now.
Been seeing some negative posts regarding this Standard format, but I love it. Good job
@wizards_magic
. Sure there are some super powerful cards in the format, and we may need some bans, but that doesn't take away from it being very enjoyable to play.
Watching the garbage fire of Magic Twitter today, I wonder how many people’s view of “pros” is from “that dude” at the local store who always is rude, scummy, and rules lawyers people. Someone who played a Pro Tour once isn’t who Zvi is talking about imo
I was feeling kinda bad ahead of the Gauntlet today, until I caught up with Ted Lasso, and Roy reminded me that Magic used to be fun. That’s why I started playing it. So today I’m going to try and have fun, chips fall as they may
Corporations aren’t your friends. We always hope they will do the right thing, but the only times they ever do is when it’s financially expedient. Make decisions accordingly.
If you wanted to design a tournament structure that was maximum pain for the participants, and minimum enjoyment for the viewers, what would the structure look like?
I believe 2019 was the best year in Magic ever.
Feel free to disagree, but remember that Magic is bigger than any one format. It’s bigger than all of sanctioned play. It’s bigger than any of us can grasp. This year had some stumbles, but it also had many triumphs.

I wonder if humans are still around in a couple hundred years if we will look back horrified by our current unfettered capitalism like we do now to slavery and other crimes of our pasts
Inspired by
@MSigrist83
and his fantastic content, I decided to play the Arena Open. Definitely a challenge having not read any of the cards beforehand, but managed to secure 2k. Was fun to play a limited tournament for the first time since I won GP Montreal
One thing that thinking like a gamer helps with a lot is making decisions that you always pay the cost for, and never see the benefit of, because they only prevent the possibility of something bad happening.
The Pro Tour.
Top Level Competition.
Rewarding prizes
Amazing new card designs
Fresh Fun formats
Ambition, desire, cunning, creativity
The best game in the world.
1) Focus on the fundamentals. I guarantee you have bad habits you need to fix.
2) Take 2-3 seconds longer to make a play. A lot of mistakes are caught right after you make the play. Delay the play until after you see why it’s bad.

Hearing people talk about how competitive magic and organized play are over because the pro tour is gone while I’m stressing over what decks to submit for the pro tour in two weeks is, I gotta say, a tiny bit exasperating.
