More than any card/set spoiler, this is the secret thing I’ve had the hardest time keeping a secret: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors developing animated ‘Magic: The Gathering’ series at Netflix via
@ew
Just played 3-way Commander with two of my kids. I won (at 1 life) with Sisters of Stone Death.
Eldest daughter: "If I got to make my own cards, they'd be overpowered like that one, too."
Had a difficult chat with my 12-year-old this morning. It was about why Brainstorm is considered a more powerful card than Emrakul, the Promised End. This will be a process.
I’ve missed showcasing players on cards since we stopped doing it years ago. Here’s to what will hopefully be a long-standing tradition of immortalizing our World Champions. Congrats again,
@JavierDmagic
!
Over the past few years, Standard play has dried up in many stores. I have my own list of possible reasons, but I’d love to hear from you about your store community. Why has sanctioned Standard play declined relative to other formats in your store?
The only cards banned in Pioneer at its inception are the fetchlands, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t true for long. We’ll be managing the format aggressively and off-cycle based on MTGO results in advance of the first tabletop premier events next year. Pass it on.
Just lost what felt like an unlosable game of MKM draft to Jace, Wielder of Mysteries into disguise/flip Coveted Falcon, giving me it and every other permanent (all lands) and decking. Stunned.

I 😍😍😍 this card so much... and more generally, how Sagas are used in
#MTGxLOTR
to depict history. And check out
@jarelthreat
's awesome token art!

Remember when Vorinclex randomly showed up in Kaldheim, and everyone was like, “A Phyrexian, what?! I wonder what that’s all about.” Ah, simpler times.
Big milestone. 20 years feels like forever but also like no time at all. I’m most proud that more people are here creating these amazing cardboard rectangles than ever… We have seven(!) new designers starting next month! Thanks to two decades of coworkers and players! ❤️🧙♂️
The data and sentiment around Modern all pointed to leaving it alone. There are definitely “best cards” but nothing worth addressing. That’s a good thing!
#WOTCstaff
The best-of-1 topic is complex and probably deserves an article, but I will clarify this right now: There is no desire anywhere to use Bo1 at competitive REL tabletop events. (I assume that’s also true for Magic Online.)
Internet people seem to enjoy coming at me with “this didn’t age well” re: this tweet. Magic changes. Things can be true one month and not as true later. Like... “It’s raining” doesn’t age well either. I’m pleased that we’re constantly reevaluating things!
As
@mtg_ianduke
mentioned in today’s article, WU Control has the 2nd-most Modern GP Top 8s recently, behind KCI. Jeskai Control is third. Hard to justify a Stoneforge Mystic unban in that environment.
This is the most exciting lineup of Magic sets ever! I’m triply-biased, however, as both a lifelong D&D fan and the design lead for MH2. You’ll have all of next year to judge for yourselves!

(And now back to your regularly-scheduled
#mtgznr
previews...)
It took a few rounds of design but I'm very happy where we landed with this Sword. For the green/white pair, we wanted something that felt constructive as opposed to destructive... so many of the the other Swords shred your opponent's board/hand!
#MTGMH2
Pauper has unified card pool now, “anything common in Gatherer.” Will be sanctionable soon. Hymn to Tourach, High Tide, and Sinkhole added to the banned list.
#WOTCstaff
Here's a rare political tweet from me. Election day is tomorrow. There's only one sane choice. Many of your favorite game designers from our company and elsewhere have cosigned this letter... Give it a read, then go do the right thing!
#BidenHarris2020
It's clear Questing Beast would have benefited from a "The" in its name. Perhaps we were blinded by our own familiarity with the source material. I am sad the legendary frame isn't helping more people avoid learning the hard way.
A note on the "rarity" of reprints in MH2... There is one new-to-Modern reprint per pack. This never takes up your normal rare slot. What "rare" means here is "How often does Wonder show up as my reprint?" Limited balance influenced these decisions a lot.
When I was a wee pup, U/G Madness was my favorite aggro deck. Basking Rootwalla🦎, Wild Mongrel🐶, and Arrogant Wurm🐍just got me.
So when I saw the preview card that WotC gave me for
#MTGMH2
, it was hard not to get all nostalgic.
Welcome back Wonder! 🦚

My 16-year-old started her first job yesterday at the childcare of the local YMCA. Promptly got called a Boomer by an 8-year-old. NOW YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS
Llanowar Elves is used as the example for the new "add" wording in the release notes for Dominaria because that is a card in the set.

Oh man, right at the end of the work day I get to reveal some more
#MTGMH2
cards! First off, a little cross-archetype synergy with a hilarious name that reminds me of ex-designer
@zdch
. All-around win on this common!
I played with most of those cards when I started, but my knowledge is sharp because we have three uncut Beta sheets hung up at the office, and I stare at them for inspiration. They are the Sacred Texts of our people.
Sheldon was so, so good at living that it’s really hard to fathom him dying. He reminded us all that this whole thing—Magic, life—is meant to be enjoyed. Blessed to have known the man. RIP
Six painlands will be reprinted in
#MTGDMU
, adding three allied ones to Pioneer. Please take a moment to appreciate the throwback in the Sulfurous Springs art, and the amazing perspective on Shivan Reef. All six (12!) are gorgeous!

There’s a lot of cool stuff going on with this card, but one of my favorite things is that partnering with D&D got us to embrace “Ranger” as a proper creature type.
Excited to announce that I’ve accepted a contract as a remote consultant for Magic’s Play Design team. Magic has been a major part of my life for 25 years and getting to touch it in some small way is a tremendous honor.
“Shrine” is not a creature type—it is an enchantment subtype. I grant you that is not obvious, and maybe even a little sad, especially because there’s an impetus to play them as a “tribe”. It was the same with Food. I will continue to gently remind folks of this rule.
Folks playing “Pioneer Sealed” here at
#mcminneapolis
. One pack of each Pioneer-legal set (44!). They have 90 minutes to build 60-card decks. Brain-melting!
The Bullets became the Wizards, now the “Football Team” are the Washington Commanders. So we just need the Nationals to renames themselves the Washington Planeswalkers.
Apparently the indestructible effect on Chance for Glory doesn't say "until end of turn," assuming the translations are correct. If so, you can Gideon emblem/Stifle/Sundial of the Infinite and make your team indestructible forever.
We have a set in the pipeline right now codenamed "Baseball". It is endlessly jarring to me to hear coworkers talking about "Baseball cards" and "playing Baseball".
My daughter is back home from college for the weekend, and one of the first things she wanted to do was raid the board game shelves for stuff to take back with her. I'll call that a win.
Took my 12yo daughter to FNM last Friday... her first-ever sanctioned matches. She went 0-3, winning just a single game, but the good news is that she’s asked to go back :)

Congrats to
@BethWListon
for winning her State House seat in Ohio last night. She was always a fierce PTQ competitor, and my memorable win-and-in opponent (playing Yawgmoth’s Bargain) in Ohio Valley Regionals in 2000.
As we head into SNC, I want to give one more big shoutout to all the folks that brought Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty to life. What a triumph. It was a long road, winding and rocky, but the destination was worth it. I was proud of it when we finished, but it was even better than that!
The next B&R announcement is in 10 days. Reminder that we will not be changing anything in Modern ahead of the Pro Tour (other than adding
#MTGRIX
of course). Pass it on.
#wotcstaff
Time Spiral (the last time we visited Dominaria) was post-apocalyptic and intentionally visually depressing. This time, we imbued the plane with the flavor of optimism, and I think that’s mattering a lot when it comes to how you all are receiving it.
#MTGDOM
We're aware of the desire to have errata issued to make older Werewolves work with day/night. I'd say it's quite unlikely, but is worth a discussion. Similarly, we didn't errata all the older Slivers to be non-symmetrical when M14 released, despite that being simpler/better.
@mtgaaron
I know you probably can't respond (and that you've been asked probably 100 times) but I'll give it a shot: are there plans for Modern in the Mythic Championship format?
Effects like these straddle the line between "draw a card" and "tutor for whatever you want" in a way that rewards deckbuilding but still promotes the right amount of variance. It took a few years to land here, but it feels like home now :)
While the card itself is fine, I can't figure out why we're seeing "look at the top X, reveal a Y from among them, put it in hand" abilities non-stop all of a sudden.
Had a Magic T-shirt on today, which started a conversation with the cashier at QFC. She said she quit playing in the early-aughts because her friends kept casting Glimpse the Unthinkable.
This depiction of the Rishadan airships just feels so *real*. Mercadia always felt kind of cartoony to me, so it’s very cool to have this art exist.

Seeing more "Pioneer ban?" tweets. Pioneer is off the weekly "lunch" ban cycle. It's now rolled in with all other formats. You will receive advance notice of when the next B&R change announcement will happen. Currently nothing on the calendar.
