If this comes to pass, it is an assault on the ability of millions of private sector workers to save for their retirement - devised by Treasury mandarins whose own gold plated pensions are paid for by those very workers.
Middle-class workers face paying up to £10 billion more in income tax as Jeremy Hunt considers drastically reducing the relief they currently enjoy on pension contributions.

It was with a heavy heart that I logged on here to see
@BethRigby
trending. The usual types of bore claiming to detect bias where it doesn’t exist and mistaking her tenacious questioning for the same. Proud to call her a friend and colleague.
Quite remarkable to reflect that the UK went 22 years with just four Chancellors - Brown, Darling, Osborne and Hammond - and now we're on track for a fourth Chancellor in just one year.
What a pleasure to be at a great
@SkyNews
event last night as we said goodbye to Dermot Murnaghan. A peerless broadcaster and a great colleague. We shall miss him hugely.
Big news here in the City this morning as
@Numis
has agreed to a takeover by
@DeutscheBank
valuing it at £410million. The statement is well worth reading - this acquisition looks to be a vote of confidence in the City of London and UK financial services.
Watching John McDonnell on
@SkyNews
rightly praising the rejuvenation of Liverpool city centre. Much of which is due to the
@Liverpool_ONE
development by
@GrosvenorGRP
, owned by the Duke of Westminster, who was criticised last week by Jeremy Corbyn.
As National Insurance is trending - a reminder that NI does not, as some people think, pay for their state pension or social care when they retire.
It is simply income tax by another name.
Big news for all
@SkyIanKingLive
viewers: as from Monday next week, our on-air time on
@SkyNews
is changing. Instead of an hour-long programme at 1000 we will have two half hour programmes - the first at 1130 and the second at 1630. Please join me at those times next Monday (1/2)
Update on the
#Diageo
media quiz last night - somehow we managed to win. Here's our team with the trophy and our host for the evening,
@PaddyMcGuinness
, who was an absolute gent and, it turns out, a keen viewer of
@SkyNews
and therefore a man of impeccable taste.
It was a privilege to be able to say farewell today to one of the smartest, intuitive and charismatic people one could hope to know. Thank you to his amazing, lovely family for welcoming so many of us today. God bless, old mate.
I’ll believe it when it happens. But it would certainly be sensible. Better still, scrap the LTA entirely. The annual allowance means there is no logical reason for it other than as a stealth tax. It punishes prudent savers while unnecessarily complicating retirement planning.
Wonderful afternoon in every way - and a big shout out to the visiting
@Boro
contingent for the way they joined in the applause for the
#AshtonGate8
. Proper supporters.
Absolutely spot on commemoration of the
#AshtonGate8
today, capped off with 3 points and a good game of football.
Top work from the club, well done to
@smd_scott
for organising and
@3PIAPC
and everyone else involved 👏
Geoff Merrick’s speech highly emotional, clearly v.touched
Big news on inflation. UK June CPI comes in at 7.9% - down from 8.7% in May and lower than expected. Sighs of relief in the Treasury and Bank of England. Probably as important - ‘core’ inflation falls from 7.1% to 6.9%.
Compelling viewing this afternoon on
@CNBC
. They run a fascinating & lengthy interview with
@Disney
CEO Bob Iger and immediately follow that with a call from activist investor Nelson Peltz in which he declared his proxy battle with the company is over. Business news at its best.
Yes, we lost. But it was still joyous to be back in a football stadium for the first time since Leap Year Day last year. And lovely to catch up with
@StephLunch
- we first met 16 years ago on Weekend Business with Jeff Randall on
@bbc5live
. Great days!
Staggering update from Patisserie Holdings - "without an immediate injection of capital...[there] is no scope for the business to continue trading in its current form." This was a £444million company two days ago.

Shocked to hear of the death of Richard Cousins. He was one of the finest business leaders Britain has produced in recent times & always entertaining company. Here's my piece on him from November.
Compass can credit Cousins for top table legacy
Very sad to learn of the passing of Brian Winterflood. A true City gent and one of the Square Mile’s great entrepreneurs. And, touchingly, a man who, when asked to state his occupation on forms, always entered ‘jobber’.
Sincere apologies to anyone hoping to see
@SkyBusinessLive
this afternoon. We had a great programme lined up for you but the channel wishes to carry on reporting the death of OJ Simpson. I am very sorry. We're next due on at 1130 BST tomorrow morning.
What a pleasure to welcome my friend & former colleague
@ArthurJEdwards
to our studio today for his 'down the line' with
@KayBurley
. No person better placed to discuss the
#RoyalEngagement
Sincere apologies to anyone hoping to see
@SkyIanKingLive
this morning. We are off-air as
@SkyNews
is providing rolling coverage of the earthquake in Turkey. Apologies, too, to the guests we have had to stand down at short notice. I'm sorry.
Doubtless someone will say it was all planned in advance. However, from here, it looks a cynical piece of attempted news management to release details of the post-Brexit tariff regime at exactly the same moment as the dreadful claimant count figures were being published.
The sign outside a restaurant just around the corner from our office in the noticeably quieter-than-usual City. People really do need to get behind pubs and restaurants right now.
Interesting line in the
#SpringStatement
- as use of cash declines, the Govt is consulting on whether eight coins and four banknotes remain appropriate in this day & age. Days of the 1p & 2p coin & £50 note numbered?
Arcadia Group has gone into administration. The administrators
@Deloitte
say no redundancies are being announced today as a result of their appointment and stores will continue to trade.
Sincere apologies to viewers hoping for the business news that, yet again,
@SkyIanKingLive
has been interrupted by a politician. Apologies as well to our guests - all of whom are very busy and build their schedules around our timetable. I am very sorry.
Some personal reflections from me on what it has been like working in the City daily during the lockdown - and on when we can expect people to begin returning to their offices:
Very interesting comments from
@RLong_Bailey
on Labour trade &
#Brexit
policy at the
#TimesCEOSummit
. Most listeners hard-pressed to distinguish between the policy she outlined & that of the Government.
This valedictory column highlights how tough an act
@jimconey
will be to follow as Money Editor of
@thetimes
.
Right up there with Jeff Prestridge, Ian Cowie, Tony Hasell, Margaret Hughes & Margaret Stone in the pantheon of PF editors.
Due to ongoing coverage of the war,
@SkyIanKingLive
has been off air during the last couple of weeks, but we're back today for a
#SpringStatement
special. Please join me on
@SkyNews
at 1000 UK time.
The last Markets Live session on
@FTAlphaville
has just ended. So sad to see it switched off - a brilliantly original and innovative idea that worked extremely well for 13 years. Congratulations to
@murphyp
,
@humenm
&
@BryceElder
for all their work on it.
There are no fewer than 16 FTSE-100 companies issuing trading updates this morning by my estimate. This does investors - or the financial media - no favours at all trying to keep across all these updates.
This is awful news. Two of the very best restaurants in the City. Sympathies and best wishes to those who have lost their jobs. And a thank you, too, for making visits to both establishments so enjoyable over many, many years. You were superb at what you did.
Awful news that Sir Ivan Menezes, the chief executive of
@Diageo_News
, has passed away. A superb CEO who not only did a stellar job running the business but who was also forward thinking and very much in tune with the times. Sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.
This is such an important story. Cuts made by George Osborne in 2015 to tax relief on pension contributions have created chaos in the NHS and elsewhere. Great reporting by
@JosephineCumbo
NHS chiefs are holding emergency talks today to hammer out a solution to a
#pension
tax problem leading hospitals to “beg and bargain” for doctors.

Many thanks to my guests this lunchtime: Akbar Al Baker from
@qatarairways
; Alistair Phillips-Davies from
@SSE
;
@steveinnes123
&
@Andre0909
. If you missed the show, you can watch it now on catch-up or on the
@SkyNews
YouTube channel. We're back at 0930 tomorrow - please join me.
Memo to all politicians: it would be greatly appreciated if you made your speeches at 1100 rather than 1030 so as not to break into the business news on
@SkyNews
So sorry to learn of the passing of Tony Pidgley, the inspirational founder of
@BerkeleyGroupUK
, a self-made man who transformed the lives of many, many people and who cared deeply about the communities in which they lived. The world could do with a few more people like him.
Yesterday I interviewed
@ChukaUmunna
at
#AWE2019
. We discussed his hopes & ambitions for
@TheIndGroup
, the current state of UK politics,
#Brexit
& advertising regulation. It was a fascinating session and you can watch it here:
The trip to visit family and friends in Devon over Easter is off. But thanks to
@exmoorales
, and their incredibly efficient dispatch service, a little bit of the West Country has come to London to help try and make up for it.
After a few weeks off air while
@SkyNews
concentrated on coverage of the war,
@SkyIanKingLive
is back this morning. Please join me at 1000 UK time for all the latest business, economics and markets news.
PM asked about Boris Johnson "f*** business" comments. "Without wealth created by business we can't do what we want to in government." But doesn't condemn those words.
#TimesCEOSummit
Lots of tributes being paid to Margaret McDonagh for her contribution to politics. But she - with her business partner Lorna - also did exceptional work with
@execpipeline
in furthering the boardroom careers of many able women. It was always a pleasure to highlight that work.
This is interesting - latest

figures reveal the UK remains the world's single largest centre of foreign exchange activity & that the UK has overtaken the US as the largest centre for OTC interest rate derivatives activity. More here:

A must-read for those who accuse energy companies of ‘profiteering’. Those profits are being invested here to guarantee security of supply. You may not like energy firms making a profit, but it’s certainly preferable to sitting in the dark freezing.
This by
@jeffprestridge
explains what many miss about the lifetime allowance being scrapped. It is perfectly reasonable to limit how much people may save into their pension annually. It is very unreasonable to then dictate how much those savings may grow.
Sincere apologies to anyone hoping to watch
@SkyIanKingLive
this morning. For once, we have been knocked off air not by breaking news, but by technical issues. We're doing everything we can to remedy this. I'm sorry.
Thank goodness for
@Eurostar
- enabling my wife’s special birthday getaway to go ahead. And no thanks at all to
@easyJet
for almost scuppering the whole thing by cancelling one of our flights at short notice.
Was going to tweet out this earlier today but our super-fast senior producer on
@SkyIanKingLive
beat me to it. From Monday, we’ll be bringing you all the latest on business, markets and the economy twice daily on
@SkyNews
. Hope you can join me.
After nine lives since 0810 this morning, plus a live show at 1330, I’ll shortly be doing my last one of the day. A big thank you to everyone at
@PeelHunt
for hosting me and my colleagues - and thanks to Warren (l) & Reggie (r) for putting up with us all day long.
Rather disappointed to see the cynicism around this story. Designing, building, refitting & maintaining these vessels supports more than 5,100 skilled jobs & added more than £300 million in gross value added to the economy last year.
What a relief!
@IanKingSky
is reporting on
#skynews
that the superyacht market has never been healthier or larger. And superyachts are getting bigger & bigger as conspicuous wealth celebrates itself. Superyacht builder calls it "a resilient business" through
#COVID19
.
Lots of excitement this morning on the possibility of the euro hitting parity with the US dollar any time now.
Here's what I wrote on the subject this time last week:
It’s time to pass the baton to
@itvfootball
. Good luck to
@markpougatch
and the team. I’m sure you’ll do your customary excellent job. Take us to the final. 🙌🏻
@matty_downunder
@JamesFitzJourno
Thanks for your response. For the record, I thought it was a rotten policy when espoused by Osborne and have frequently highlighted in my Times columns the malign impact of his policies (and those of other Chancellors, notably Gordon Brown) on pensions savers.
Apologies to anyone hoping to see
@SkyIanKingLive
this morning. We are off air while
@SkyNews
brings you all the latest from events in Ukraine. I will be appearing throughout the day, though, to provide the latest updates from the markets.
After a month off air, while our shiny new set was being built,
@SkyIanKingLive
is back at 1.30pm today - please join me for all the latest news on business, markets and the economy.
'He just said 'you've saved my life, I don't just mean now I mean everything.'
'I said 'I love you' and that was the last time I spoke to him.'
Kate Garraway tells Ben and Ranvir about the last time she spoke to her husband Derek before he was put into a coma with coronavirus.
@ruskin147
Rory - desperately sorry to hear that, but good to know it won't stop you from keeping up your great work. Very best of luck with the treatment.
Memo to headline writers - freezing the lifetime pensions allowance is NOT a tax raid on pensioners. Existing pensioners & those nearing retirement will already have locked in the LTA at higher levels. It is a tax raid on younger workers saving for their retirement.
#Budget2021
Absolutely extraordinary remark in the
@thesundaytimes
business pages. Don’t think I can ever previously recall a business leader describing a Conservative PM as “evil”.
Sincere apologies to anyone hoping to watch
@SkyBusinessLive
today. I'm afraid we're off air this morning due to coverage of the Supreme Court ruling while this afternoon the PM has rather tiresomely announced he will be making a press statement in our time. I'm very sorry.
Sincere apologies to anyone hoping to see
@SkyIanKingLive
this morning. We are off air as
@SkyNews
will be carrying live coverage of the privileges committee report on Boris Johnson. I'm sorry. Apologies also to the brilliant line-up of guests we'd booked for today.
Deeply depressing story from
@ManchesterSU
, where I was proud to serve on the student union executive 30 years ago. These people display the very intolerance they claim to abhor in others.

Good luck to England in tomorrow’s Netball World Cup Final. I had the privilege of interviewing two of our stars - Fran Williams and Laura Malcolm, who both starred in today’s semi-final - back in 2020. Wishing them all the best.
The staff were always friendly although, given the prevailing mood, they'd probably rather have been at home with their families. The shop closes forever tomorrow and I'm sad at that - but it has been a daily reminder of the great work shop workers did in the pandemic. (2/2)
Sincere apologies to anyone hoping to see
@SkyIanKingLive
this morning. I'm afraid we are off-air because
@SkyNews
will be carrying live coverage of the start of
@covidinquiryuk
. I'm sorry. Apologies also to the guests we'd lined up to speak with us today.
Weird stuff going on at the UK stock market close. The FTSE-100 was on course for a 9.81% drop but after the closing auction it ended down 10.87%. That is the second worst one day fall of all time and the worst points fall ever.
