It seems to me that a lot of socializing of the past specifically avoided the impression of "hanging around." Had to have an opening ritual, monthly speaker, a meal, a dance, an unbuilt barn, a quilt, a Bible discussion, etc.

As a man whose mother did very little cooking and kept the house in a state of chaos, I would really like a girl who could keep house and is at least inclined to make sandwiches or heat up some soup
@SpiritofPines
I want to know how the argument was framed back in the early 19th century. "This man, who cannot scrape together 20 shillings of capital to show the Assessor, must have a voice on public policy"
@Quaesitor121
@eigenrobot
He does that all the time in the Old testament
"I've been hearing rumors about how extremely gay this town is, and I cannot believe it could be that gay, so I'm going to investigate"
@AppFanfiction
I sat down with my sister's tablet and read all of it one evening. What I remember most is that in the very first paragraph, the girl protagonist is described putting on her boots, and then proceeding to put on her socks

I love this. I've wondered about what motivates demons, and they idea that they're all different is probably true. I also wonder if they are jealous of not being able to be fathers
@Empty_America
I am of course very supportive of a much more robust naval and merchant empire than we have now. But nobody can articulate how Americans benefit from interfering in every squalid hinterland on the planet
@EloquentMind101
@eigenrobot
Who cares what those people agree with? Our forebearers won the civilization game in 1803, now all you guys have to lump it
@Finnothyjest
I think the basic plot of "people go to social events, get offended at each other, nothing actually happens, heroine gets married" is eternally appealing to women

My theory on a lot of parent child-relationships is that it's difficult to move on from the first impression a person gets when their child is a useless meatloaf
@Empty_America
Is it really frustration? The English got to America and all thought to themselves, "we're going to make this even More English" whatever their conception of English was
@Empty_America
There isn't going to be a conservative party, there isn't anything to conserve. The rights of Englishman and the founding will have to be reinstituted by complete radicals
@AppFanfiction
My thinking is this messaging should mainly be directed at the people who left their village in the [Midwest] and moved to some city for a GoodJob™. Those are the people who have somewhere to move to and the best foundations to build on
@AStratelates
Occasionally, it would go the other way, and an English/American would murder a friendly Indian leader for no good reason, and never get to trial
