They were also warned of “regulatory risk” when investing. Literally the risk that regulation / legal changes reduce the return you can generate from the investment.
No "institutional investor" or "asset manager" bought into onerous ground rents without calculating the risk involved. They probably enjoyed the thrill of thinking they were "getting one over" on their fellow humans. They deserve to lose.

If leaseholders don’t actually own property, why are they charged stamp duty? Will his majesties revenue be issuing refunds for wrongly paid stank duty and asking freeholders to pay instead as they truly own the homes?
