💡 New report proposes 1st rights-based framework to guide AI use in the justice system, to help harness AI’s power safely. AI isn’t a cure-all & its use carries big risks – to individuals & to democracy if people lose trust in the law through more scandals like Horizon (1/4)

Thank you to @sarahsackman, the AG, former LC, @AlexChalkChelt, our host and former @UKSupremeCourt President, @LordNeuberger, @JoshBabarinde and @tomrutland for supporting this important guide for all legislators and those they serve.
Wonderful to meet up with the team at @JUSTICEhq yesterday for the parliamentary launch of the “Law for Lawmakers” guide - a vital resource for new MPs as we strive to ensure law and politics can work together.

All in all, the government should think again. Getting rid of ineffective short prison stays is one far better way to solve the overcrowding crisis, as is doubling down on housing, healthcare, and jobs as a way to build safer and healthier communities for us all. (6/6)

We found other serious issues with magistrates’ courts’ remand decision-making, including failing to properly follow the law & an overuse of prison stays. The govt mustn’t boost magistrates’ sentencing powers unless sure their sentencing decisions don’t have similar issues. (5/6)

I enjoyed meeting some really impressive colleagues from across the third sector to share and compare our work and our aspirations for a better prison system with Minister Timpson, @MoJGovUK and @hmpps
Minister Timpson met with inspiring leaders of organisations working in prisons and with the probation services. These conversations provide invaluable insights to understand how to address the prisons crisis and drive reform.

Very concerning @HMIPrisonsnews report into detainees’ treatment at Harmondsworth IRC. With the contract up for re-tender, we urge @ukhomeoffice to consider recommendations in our new report on a rights-centred approach to government contracting:
In his foreword @charlie_taylor6, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, said: "Overall, the outcomes at Harmondsworth were the worst that HMI Prisons has found in its IRC inspections." Read the full report here: https://t.co/qi0lwbIHgh

We’re disappointed that @ECHR_CEDH dismissed Victor Nealon & Sam Hallan's case on the test for compensation for miscarriages of justice. Between them, Mr Nealon & Mr Hallam spent over 24 years in prison for crimes they didn’t commit but were denied any compensation. (1/6)
