7 p.m. ET aurora update โ while a severe geomagnetic storm IS ongoing, the magnetic shockwave's field orientation "matches" that of Earth's... so there's no big flash/auroral display (yet). Earlier, there was a misalignment and the ensuing clash brought auroras all the way down

Sadly, a flux rope in the CME has come in and decided the fun is over. Regardless, a flux rope strength of nearly 100 nT is stunning! This may be a NWS rope.

The X1.9 flare/CME has been an overachiever! It is responsible for the SEP event with the highest >10 MeV proton flux (3.7e4) since 1991-03-23, i.e., higher than the Bastille Day 2000 and Halloween 2003. Now G4 storm (Kp=8+) thanks to strong magnetic field and high wind speed.

An S4 severe solar radiation storm is now in progress - this is the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years. The last time S4 levels were observed was in October, 2003. Potential effects are mainly limited to space launch, aviation, and satellite operations.
