Spanish sociologist, schoolteacher, mum, feminist. Spent 3 years researching the 'gender wars', censorship & working life in academia. Suffered consequences…
Please help me take City university to court for discrimination, harassment and more. They have cancelled my research and taken away my data. It’s a large sociological study of the ‘gender wars’, working conditions and censorship in academia!!!
Sharing my crowdfund again as need a bit more to reach target and legal team hard at work - can you please help tell everybody that cares about academic freedom, scientific evidence and women’s rights? My interview and survey data has been confiscated!!!
Now that the research is officially suspended, I thought I'd share my draft title and opening for a journal article on the interviews I was writing (often in tears)... spot on those predictions about what would happen to my career... the start is from:
Over 60K! *Thank you SO much!!!* I recommend looking at the comments (thank you!!), e.g: “I’m a precarious scholar in WGSS [...] so I’m electing not to display my name publicly”, “Academic freedom is under attack”, “I too have been cancelled and sacked”...
Thank you for helping me spread the word. I need my data back to publish findings and to deposit the survey as per my commitments and for other researchers to analyse if they wish 🙏
An academic who migrated to London to carry out a project on censorship at universities over the transgender issue was made redundant and had her findings seized. This was after other academics told the University of London the research was 'transphobic'
I have just found this: Julia Long at Speakers Corner talking about my case. Truly moved. Her removal alongside Sheila Jeffreys from a City event in 2019 was a case study of my research, inc via interviews - now taken away from me
#dangerousdata
Huge thanks for your support
@fairplaywomen
!! I interviewed 50 gender studies scholars across ‘sides’ of the ‘gender wars’, and collected 600+ survey responses by social scientists. City has dismissed me, cancelled the research, and taken this unique data away.
A feminist sociologist is taking City, University of London to an Employment Tribunal for discrimination, harassment, victimisation and whistleblowing detriment.
Thank you for this. My situation is grim: not “just” what I’ve been put through, but my research has been suspended and access to my interview and survey data denied. I want it back, deposit the anonymised survey, and publish findings!

@EHRC
"Academic freedom is under serious threat," writes Lauren Smith. "Instead of defending the right of academics to pursue the truth, universities are too often caving into trans ideologues—we need more academics to speak out against this shameful behaviour."
Thank you for the mention. Indeed I was dismissed and made to leave behind my 50 interviews and 600+ survey responses… my three years of hard work to investigate academia sociologically, cancelled by a university (and more -)

📣Hoy es el aniversario del artículo que cambió mi vida: Heridas por las "guerras del género" en la academia (). Es un día triste para mí, pero tengo noticias, con versión en 🇪🇸: Me ayudáis a difundir? 🙏
Thank you everyone for all your support so far, the donations, the comments, the tweets… everything! Words are not enough to capture what this means to me, after what I have endured in isolation, and during these extremely difficult times. Gracias, gracias y más gracias!!!
Pleased to see

If only it wasn't necessary to take one's employers to court - can't they just, you know, keep the law?

My hearing has been listed for 12 days, starting 16th September 2024. I’m STILL trying to get City to deposit the anonymised survey - it’s been a year now of this… also STILL trying to get the interviews transferred to my other uni… I’m depleted, yet not giving up

Promises to be a pinata of dissembling as someone is going to have to try to justify (a) cancelling Laura's project & (b) holding on to her research.
Should be grim.
The survey was funded by the

Thanks Sonia! It is absolutely about academic freedom. Note also that the research suspended & data taken away is *precisely* on the ‘gender wars’, working conditions and censorship in academia. I’ve been personally & professionally destroyed for doing my job as a sociologist
Another significant case re employment discrimination in relation to sex and gender, this time in relation to City University. Important implications for academic freedom too.

What a surprise: the censorious left is censoring research about the machinations of the censorious left: the modern university in action, folks: alumni: stop donating. You are funding your sworn enemies:

Absolutely horrified to hear how appallingly you've been treated Laura. It's unfathomable that in 2023 women are being punished for doing feminist research and that UCU is consistently refusing to speak out against it or the bullying and abuse.

Last time I spoke at conf. wasn't consequence free. There followed abuse on SM. In messages liked and reshared by LD members & officers comparisons were made to pubic lice infestations. I've been called many names for standing up for women’s rights, but never dehumanised before
Comments on this crowdfund for an academic freedom of speech case are worth reading. Moving how many give small amount & apologise for tht (eg £5 'I'm a feminist pensioner'). Striking that those who say more talk only about freedom of thought & speech, as far as I have scrolled.

Just donated. If YOU care about the freedom of academics to research counter cultural topics (in this case gender critical issues) & push back against an orthodoxy stifling free speech & expression support Laura's tribunal campaign. Best wishes, Matt
