After running a lab that centers inclusion for 4 years now, I’d like to share some of our lab practices that have really worked in case this info is helpful for others.

Software engineering is a discipline rooted in identifying major challenges and then constructing solutions to them, for the benefit of many. The important contributions of Research Software Engineers need to be recognized and rewarded as biomedical science advances.

We outline pathways for researchers to engage and work effectively with RSEs. These include networking, training through the @carpentries, and initiatives that champion Open Science such as @ReproHack, @openlifesci, @cdchck and the @turingway

We provide examples of how RSEs have transformed Biomedical research through massive infrastructure and engineering projects such as @ensembl and @DeepMind AlphaFold, and highlight their role in accelerating impact of @humancellatlas COVID data.

There are ten established associations in the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and North America @RsseAfrica, @RSE_Asia, @rse_aunz, @rse_be, @RSE_de, @nl_rse, @nordic_rse @ResearchSoftEng, @us_rse, @ncl_rse, @turinghut23, @ucl_arc, @eScienceCenter

Research software engineering is an emerging field that is critical for the scaling and reproducibility of scientific output. It combines professional software engineering expertise with an intimate understanding of research.
