Disconnected from research? It’s actually scandalous. It’s fraud. It’s malpractice. AND it’s not just happening with reading/writing. Let’s look at #math too. People in positions of responsibility MUST have the KNOWLEDGE to lead. #SoR

“So many teachers like me have believed that a professor at Teachers College, an Ivy League institution, should be up-to-date on the reading research. The fact that she was disconnected from that research is evidence of the problem.”

Always pay attention. The Reading Recovery Council of North America is changing its name to the “Literacy Council of North America.” Don’t be fooled. It’s still made up of the same players.

"Rather than being the precursor to reading, “phonemic awareness” results from progress in learning to read alphabetic writing." Excellent clarification about phonemic awareness.

Good news in Manitoba as govt passes Bill 225 for reading screening. "Bill 225 requires elementary schools to systematically screen elementary students for early signs of struggle, immediately act on warning signs and document findings in report cards." https://t.co/bRuBPjAYjB

🔁 Increasing opportunities to respond is one the most transformative tools in teaching. More student responses = ✅ higher engagement ✅ more time on task ✅ more learning We discuss why it's important in the clip. Lots of strategies discussed in the full episode. Link below.

We teachers have a lot of tasks on our plate but scrounging for lesson materials shouldn't be one of them. We need access to evidence-based materials with a clear scope and sequence so we can ensure we are supporting all students towards mastery.

Hard-hitting article by the amazing Barbara Oakley. "Our brains need practice & memorization to move facts & skills into long-term memory, freeing up mental space for genuine problem-solving...a student cannot reason deeply about mathematics w/o mult'n facts and algebraic methods

Who remembers that Facebook thread on the @FountasPinnell page about teaching reading? The one about the 20%. Getting very similar vibes in the math conversation now. “You can’t ensure students learn no matter what strategies you use.” Thoughts? @ehanford

It’s exactly the same as when someone says, they “need to focus on SEL before they can teach any ‘academics’.” What people don’t realize is that their SEL improves as we teach children they can do things.

If your students don’t do as well in reading, writing and mathematics as students from similar backgrounds elsewhere and you claim this is because you focus on wellbeing or ‘the whole child’ then you are telling yourself a comforting lie.

This was a great episode to listen to on a beautiful fall day. I sure wish I’d known about effective math education BEFORE I retired. Now I know why it was so difficult to implement the programs recommended by my district. I kept going back to Jump Math.

100%! As a reading tutor, UFLI has been the easiest program for me to implement. All the bits and pieces are there on the website and in my manual. Plus, I love the new assessment because it accurately shows me where to start each student in lessons.

@rpondiscio @karenvaites @HKorbey @EdReports Usability and appeal is always an essential part of getting any program into practice. Researchers are good at the efficacy part, but seldom focus on these factors. Publishers are better at usability and appeal, but ignore efficacy.

This is exactly why “teacher leaders” need to be in schools, not board offices. We need more people modeling and showing teachers how to implement. Many teachers know what to do, but not what it looks like or what to change. #ImplementationMatters

@rpondiscio @karenvaites @HKorbey @EdReports Teachers are left to figure all that out on their own, so of course they treat the programs as a buffet of resources. Ask the people providing "PD" on these programs to model a lesson, and most can't. Their "PD" is simply a tour of the buffet.

Math & reading scores are declining in BC. Why?Because of this: "Nicol is not convinced we need to change how we teach math in B.C., especially if it involves moving away from inquiry" & "I don’t think [the scores] are anything to be too concerned about" https://t.co/m1KMEgvZRa

A lot of people wonder about spiral math programs. They way my listener described it: "fractions, one week, geometry the next...topics moved before mastery was achieved." Jonathan Regino and I talked about this in my latest episode. Link to full episode below.
