JRPGs still have barely evolved past FF1 so he was absolutely correct. CRPGs have changed a lot over the years in comparison, often for the better. We are still seeing releases like Persona 5 or Octopath Traveller (1 and 2) that are literally FF1 with extra steps.
It seems like Greg Zeschuk's comment about JRPGs in 2009 was what made it hurt a lot for Japanese devs, especially considering he's the co-founder of Bioware, a studio with games that many of them respected like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights
