Had a water heater issue. Electrician figured out it was a problem with the outlet. Instead of fixing the outlet, he cut a hole in the wall, snaked the cord through, and plugged it into an outlet OUTSIDE of the closet.
So, like…what’s the job that allows you to actually do research for a living? Not going to meetings, overseeing other people’s research, emails, reviewing other people’s ideas, etc…but actually DOING your OWN research?
Asking for a friend*

Hey Academics...what are the cool things you do and/or make outside of your research?? Do you draw? Dance? Make music? Build stuff? Knit? Cook?
SHOW US! Please take this tweet to brag about your hobbies without reserve!
I have some fun news to share with my academic twitter circle: I am expecting a little boy at the end of the year.
Not that I owe anyone an explanation, but bc I think my openness could help other students who want to have kids during grad school... a thread🧵
Psychologists heading journals: AHHH THE REPLICATION CRISIS!!
Me: *replicates findings and extends work in understudied population*
Psychologists heading journals: But...it’s old and not sexy...we can’t review that....
There’s something to be said about clinical psych training models and this here outlet blunder…fixing the root causes…not making things hard than they need to be with a cheap “solution”, etc.
IDK who needs to hear this: I worked my tail off on an NSF app that didn't get funded...BUT IT DID lead me to my thesis project, gave me the intro for my PhD personal statement, was the first thing I worked on with my mentor and I learned about my area of research & writing.
@DrTaraB20
@AcademicChatter
Maybe it has something to do with grad students being older (due to increased need for post-bac experiences, thus greater age at PhD start time)? Sharing a hotel room with 2-3 other people sounded more fun at 22 than it does at nearly 30…I’d rather split a room w/ 1 person
ATTENTION MEN: if you stay silent about Roe v Wade, your message to the women in your life (i.e., in your family, friend groups, work teams) is that you’re cool if they lose their bodily autonomy because you still have yours.
We are watching.
@SolomonKurz
Ok so it’s a newly built condo and we have to go through the contractor list from the builder to get things fixed and the cost covered. This would not have been my choice of person. That said, the builder got an earful this evening.
LIFE HACK: Want to increase your productivity?
Actively avoid that one thing on your to do list, by completing every single other thing on your to do list.
I call this Adaptive Procrastination™️
I had the opportunity to interview virtually at a number of fantastic programs this application cycle and given the likely continuation of the virtual format, I wanted to share some things different programs did that worked really well.
A thread 🧵
This is my annual reminder to faculty reviewing applications:
Tweeting about how many ~amazing, incredible, fantastic~ applicants you have and that your program is up 50% so “thank you to all who applied I’m so lucky!”, makes people feel awful and is a bad look.
@jengolbeck
@latifnasser
Dr. Golbeck you are a national treasure. I hope your reviewer 2’s are nice, your coffee is fresh, and your dogs stay healthy. May the gods of academia bless you with all the tenure. Amen.
Whenever I hear someone say “money doesn’t buy happiness”, I automatically know they have never been poor.
Like- its hard to be happy when you’re hungry, behind on bills, car is on E with $1.67 in your account...etc.
Money buys well-being. Let us not mince words.
The my-PhD-program-starts-next-week anxiety is ~real~ 🫠
Now accepting feel good stories about your first week in your PhD program and general nuggets of wisdom.
A professor just asked who has seen an encyclopedia set in real life and I was one of only a few who raised their hands. So yeah, send help because I'm SPIRALING.
Listen, I know academia isn’t perfect but…I’d bet money this guy has never worked in retail, a restaurant, or any type of physical labor.
It is a *privilege* to learn for a living. Even on the worst days, I wake up grateful I don’t have to work retail during the holidays.
I’m finishing up an ethics paper on
@betterhelp
and WHEW LORD. I’m admittedly conservative when it comes to ethics, but there’s no amount of money you could pay me to do therapy on these “therapy matching” platforms.
That said, it’s been a fun paper to write!
Sending big congratulations to
@CDelawalla
, who successfully defended her thesis today! I'm confident she's going big places, y'all, so keep your eyes out for more from this lady!
One of the funniest things about being friends/working with a bunch of clinical psych people is the use of “say more” in regular conversation, and that everyone in the conversation knows what’s happening when the phrase is used.
STUDENTS: As we approach semester eval season, remember, there is a human being on the other end of that eval you're about to write and the dept chair probably won't read your comments.
Be kind.
Idk who needs to hear this, but the label “ally” is bestowed upon you by members of marginalized groups who want to communicate that you’re a person who *puts in the work* to make the world a safer place for them.
Calling yourself an ally is like calling yourself a genius…
I’m asking because I feel like “if you love research find a TT position” is the messaging…but the vast majority of time in those positions is not spent on your own research.
I just love what I do and want to do it forever 😩
@missfloratang
1) start as early as possible
2) tie it to your line of research so you don’t have to start a lot review from scratch
3) make sure everything you write has two purposes
@jfitzgeraldMD
YES! I’ve ~joked~ that we need a true informed consent process regarding pregnancy and childbirth. But it’s really not a joke. There are so many things I didn’t know were possible issues going in (due with my first in a few weeks and not having a good time)
Raise your hand if you set ~very~ ambitious goals for the semester and absolutely didn't achieve them all...but made a lot of progress and did other things you're proud of!
Big congrats to
@CDelawalla
who proposed her thesis today! She's examining whether the bifurcation of positive and negative urgency is warranted... stay tuned for results!!!
Also sending thanks to
@AKaye_Johnson
and Holmes Finch for feedback!

As today is the grad school admissions deadline, I’d like to share the story of the time I blew an interview during a “non-evaluative” zoom game.
A thread🧵
This was the former “club house” in my old neighborhood. Someone bought it, converted it into a home, and ran a swim club out of it. They even let people park there for some of our wedding events. Also…HOA is not free, they just didn’t take dues last year.
Learning in grad school is weird.
The more you learn, the more you realize you know absolutely nothing about anything. But when you sit down to write, you are surprised by how much you know on the topic you were sure you knew nothing about.
Friend: So, how long is the PhD? 2 years?
Me: 💀💀💀 try 5-6.
F: then you can be a professor?
Me: then a year internship.
F: …
Me: then a post-doc
F:…
Me: then, perhaps if I work hard enough & the wind blows the right way & the govt doesn’t kill uni’s: maybe
I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to put into words how wonderful it is to wake up and get to live the life I’ve been working toward/hoping for/imagining, for years.
Maybe in a few years I’ll be tired, but right now I’m relishing every second. I’m so grateful.
My point in sharing this is to highlight how much has to line up for a woman to have a kid in grad school with any sort of "ease".
There is no good time to have a baby and career goals as woman in America--particularly in academia.
Did you know that ~2 million people were killed during the Partition and that it was the largest migration in the HISTORY of humans?
Here are a couple things I’ve picked up from the Delawalla dinner table…
"My family lost everything because of this event."
South Asians from across the world share how the India-Pakistan partition shaped their identities after 75 years.
Inequitable University Policy of the Day:
I earned a grant for my research (yay!), but the only way I can access it is to front the $ and wait for reimbursement, which takes longer than the credit card billing period...thus I pay interest to access my research funds (not yay).
Hello
#academictwitter
#psychtwitter
Just wanted to celebrate the submission of my first, first-author manuscript with a tweet 🍾🥂
Sincerely,
A tired, but very excited grad student
Your quarterly reminder that librarians are the most helpful people.
Today I met with the psych dept’s librarian and learned all kinds of cool things. The BEST is that you can connect google scholar to your uni library account.
Happy application deadline day to everyone applying to PhD programs! You should absolutely take time to rest and celebrate this weekend—it’s a BIG accomplishment!!!
@Chops310
*must pay out of pocket first before reimbursement for travel awards
**Oh you're on a grad student stipend? Check will come via snail mail to the address provided in approximately 4-6 months
Lots of people have pointed out the many issues with this tweet, but I’d like to highlight one near and dear to my heart and that is calling ADULTS pursuing graduate training “kids”.
We are ADULTS, graduate training is a JOB we are PAID to do, and this is our career.
My jaws keep dropping as I go through 70 PhD applicant files. People w/ 2 coauthored papers & an interesting solo writing sample don’t even make it to the top 10 in my pile.
The level of knowledge, research experience & passion these kids bring to the table is just remarkable! 🤩
Just so we are all on the same page the “if you don’t want Islamophobic posters at this conference, then come review posters next year…we need more Muslim reviewers!” take is a bad one.
Call out your colleagues when you see this stuff! Don't be a bystander.
My hot take for the day is that college student samples aren't always the devil*. Allowing high quality work done in college samples can make research more equitable because the funds & infrastructure needed for sampling other pops is hard to come by for those not at R1 unis.
