5. Deciding the market is bad and that they'll just grit it out in academia for another year. This will keep you unsatisfied.

4. Looking solely for jobs that match their PhD research topic. This won't work.

AND I know many of you PhDs out there are trying to exit academia now and struggling in the process.

Despite all those hiccups and pitfalls along the way, I don't regret having done a PhD nor do I regret having left academia. These were steps that led me to where I am now.

5. I didn't acknowledge red flags during interviews. I was so desperate to get *any* job, I ignored obvious flags. Asking me whether I wanted kids during the interview? Please hire me! Keeping your computer open, actively typing during the interview? Please hire me!

4. I didn't package my work well. For my faculty job talks, my message was: "look at all I've gotten done, imagine what more I could do!" I could have marketed my work far more effectively.

3. I assumed I could get a faculty job somewhere in the state of California. Good luck with that one.

2. I didn't network at all during my time in academia. I thought conferences were about going to the talks. I learned too late they were about getting beers with people.

1. I believed in "publish or perish." I took it too literally and assumed my 17 publications would get me a job. They didn't.
