Despite all those hiccups and pitfalls along the way, I don't regret having done a PhD nor do I regret having left academia. These were steps that led me to where I am now.

5. I didn't acknowledge red flags during interviews. I was so desperate to get *any* job, I ignored obvious flags. Asking me whether I wanted kids during the interview? Please hire me! Keeping your computer open, actively typing during the interview? Please hire me!.

4. I didn't package my work well. For my faculty job talks, my message was: "look at all I've gotten done, imagine what more I could do!" I could have marketed my work far more effectively.

3. I assumed I could get a faculty job somewhere in the state of California. Good luck with that one.

2. I didn't network at all during my time in academia. I thought conferences were about going to the talks. I learned too late they were about getting beers with people.

1. I believed in "publish or perish." . I took it too literally and assumed my 17 publications would get me a job. They didn't.
