Can we talk about how it's unrealistic for PhD programs to expect students in coursework to write four (or however many) original 20-30 page papers in the span of a week at the end of every semester? Like, how does everyone else do this?
Yo priests, if the Easter Sunday gospel is literally on Mary Magdalene, don’t spend the entire homily only talking about John and Peter and closing the homily by urging us all to “follow in the examples of John and Peter who alone believed in the resurrection.” 😡
My theobrogian classmate presented a paper in class today that “refutes queer theology” because “gay = sin, and God can’t bless sin.” Wow never heard of that before. Am shook! Guess I gotta go repent my sinful lifestyle choices now brb.
Police violently arrest peacefully protesting students
@NotreDame
under the Golden Dome.
This is how a Catholic school wants to treat its students who advocate for life, justice, and peace.
Dorothy Day & Dan Berrigan, St. Francis of Assisi & St. Oscar Romero, pray for these
@notredame
students who are arrested tonight for their peaceful protests for a more peaceful world.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called children of God.”
Girlfriend is officially an MDiv! 🥳 Victoria doesn’t have a twitter (but she creeps on my feed sometimes!), so plz help me celebrate this beautiful and kind YDS grad who will go on to write even more brilliant decolonial Filipino-American theology in the future. 👩🏻🎓
Notre Dame Right to Life promoting the opportunity to physically travel to DC for March for Life (and sightseeing!) in January *during* this new wave of the pandemic is not a very pro-life move, actually.
On this Holy Thursday, I’m thinking about all those who wash others’ feet, especially the many Asian women & women of color who work in nail salons and massage parlors, who wash feet and do tender works of bodily care for a living. May they be blessed on this holy day.
That homophobic NCRegister article by a “moral theologian” who cites Aquinas to justify parents rejecting their gay child is one of the reasons I’m glad my parents weren’t book-citing theologians but just Christians who are like “yeah god is love & I’m glad u found love” to me
Reading this book in its entirety for the first time & thinking about how one time sophomore year of undergrad, I skipped my required theology class to go to a public lecture by Gustavo Gutierrez on campus, and that talk changed the way I view theology since then.
in div school, Mark Jordan once lectured on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s Catholic corporal work of mercy of caring for the sick & dying and providing death rites for those whom the church does not (queer AIDS patients).
No.
Also, bad public theology (how we think of the death of Christ + of the victims of the world as sacrifices) leads to bad statements like this. Suffering of the innocent should never be held up as sacrifices, but as results of structural and direct violence.

@SpeakerPelosi
speaking at presser with CBC: Thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice...Because of you and because of thousands, millions of people around the world who came out for justice, your name will always be synonymous for justice.
10 yrs ago in my Christian high school, we were assigned the essay question “should Christians support war?”. I was one of the 3 students in the entire class to say no & argue against war.
Fast forward to today, I finished my last coursework in my theology & peace studies PhD! 🎉
If you have prayers to spare on this Holy Tuesday, keep me in your prayers today. It’s been a hard week mental health-wise, with the rainy weather, all my classes switched to online for various reasons, and continuous anti-Asian violence + my need to keep thinking about them💜
Six years ago today I became Catholic! Grateful for this weird wild ride of a journey since then.
If given the same choice today, I’m not sure whether I would become Catholic, so I’m beyond grateful that I said yes on that day.

not-so-hot take, but whenever someone at a religion/theology conference says that one of their research interests is "theologies of gender and sexuality," it's code word for they're gay.
Yes that someone is me. hi.
anyway that lecture taught me more about the meaning of Catholic rituals and death rites than I could’ve imagined & reinvigorated my love for the liturgy and how it can tend to needs of the sick and marginalized
Accidentally (read: intentionally) wore this 🌈 shirt during my visit today to the Pope John Paul II chapel-shrine built by Bishop Robert Barron at Mundelein Seminary today.
yesterday I spent a good chunk of time during my oral exams sketching out a theology of land that explicitly rejects terra nullius/Doctrine of Discovery and today it’s officially axed, and I’d like to think that i have caused this doctrine change, somehow
The Vatican formally repudiated the "doctrine of discovery," officially declaring that a long-held policy used to justify colonial exploitation is "not part of the teaching of the Catholic Church."
@cwwhiteNCR
reports from Rome:
Wrote this article in light of the Atlanta shootings. May we as a church and a country repent of the ways we continue to silence the voices and bodies of BIPOC and marginalized women.

Each year at Commencement Mass, Fr. Jenkins blesses an American flag that will fly over campus.
May it always remind us of the principles it stands for: Life, liberty and justice for all.
Today at
@NotreDame
, students of various faiths led prayers for Gaza and prayers for ND to commit to the Catholic Social Teaching principles of peace and solidarity with the poor and marginalized. $$ and taxes for the poor and homeless >>> $$ that fund weapons of mass destruction
When NDRTL peeps came up to us condom crowd to “dialogue” about the religious and secular reasons why “condoms weaken the fabric of society” (I’m not kidding, they said that), do they know that they’re talking to someone who’s getting her 3rd theology degree? 🤨🙋🏻♀️
Dress according to your biological sex? Then why are y’all wearing white lace skirts then?
(Gendered dress codes are a historically-culturally particular social construct YALL)
New "Catechesis and Policy" from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee
@archmil
forbids the use of "'preferred pronouns' in speech or in writing" in "parishes, organizations, or institutions"; people to follow dress codes "in accord with their biological sex."
props to Notre Dame for becoming more inclusive toward queer students, international students, students who go by their middle names, and all students who have a preferred name for whatever reason :)
Our theology class is reading Ratzinger this week, and one of the readings (unsurprisingly) was transphobic/homophobic. Half of my class would agree w/ this view, sadly. My queer classmates and I are angry and scared for class discussion.
Bad theology hurts (and kills), y’all.
happy pride to all the queer students, staff, and faculty at Notre Dame! 🌈Thank you for being the very imperfect place where I started my studies of queer theology and grew closer to the many faces of God’s love and mercy.
PS dont read the comments
Happy
#PrideMonth
! We celebrate all LGBTQ+ identities and reaffirm our commitment to being a welcoming, safe and supportive place for ALL members of the Notre Dame family.
We see you. We're glad you're here. You are an important member of our community.
We pray for the
@USCCB
, that during this Lenten season of penitence, that they too may repent from their sins of homophobia, transphobia, & hatred; decenter their prejudiced power; and experience conversion toward Christ's embracing love for all.
We pray to the Lord.
The

that they may continue to radiate, rebel, & reveal
your triune name.

i got my girlfriend filipino and indonesian cookbooks for Christmas and she got me a gorgeous cast iron dutch oven because we are both lesbian tradwives who Belong In The Kitchen
@AOHSUsometimesY
I’m sorry that happened! I’d go into scary strict parent mode and full on lecture the kid to not do that in Angry Asian Dad voice but thats just me!
Are we Catholics going to talk about how
#SEEK21
(FOCUS' annual national conference) invited an ex-gay speaker, or in the speaker's own words, a woman who "once struggled with homosexual desires" to virtually speak to thousands of Catholic youth around the country?
Am just ugly crying in public in Duncan Student Center after thinking about how I didn’t think that the Pope endorsing gay civil unions would even be possible within my life time.
In an undergrad peace studies class I’m TA-ing for:
Professor: “okay does anyone have any questions about the syllabus?”
Student: “well this isn’t on the syllabus but what is your opinion on what’s going on in Afghanistan and what the US’ response should be?”
A Biden-Harris admin will likely repeal the new DHS rule that bars international students like me from staying in the US for more than 4 yrs w/o special approval (my PhD program is 6yrs). Tis a good day to wake up and know that I might just be able to finish my PhD program.
My course syllabus next semester features this image of Catholic peace activist Fr Dan Berrigan protesting against the bombing of Vietnam and Cambodia. Yesterday at
@NotreDame
we protest for peace channeling his spirit & the spirit of many other peacebuilders of faith.
working on some writing on how US Cath. leadership (albeit reluctantly) mourns queer death after hate crimes while actively working against queer livelihood. what does it mean for us when our death "matter" more than our lives?
Happy because I got my first CPE offer today ☀️🥳 Sharing this on Twitter because my corner of twitter is the probs only place where I don’t have to give a lengthy explanation on what hospital chaplaincy/CPE is🙃

gyno: "so now that your IUD is taken out, what will you use for birth control"
me: *points at girlfriend*
gyno: "ah. reverting to women is even better than reverting to condoms. it's the most effective form of birth control!"
me:😅
gf:😅

no shade to my theology department i love them, BUT the amount of "model syllabi" for our intro to theology classes that feature ZERO women theologians/women authors is way to high, like, embarrassingly high
Also this priest did many other cringe things during the Easter homily, including jokingly asking the mom of a just-baptized tiny baby whether she’s pregnant again while pointing at her belly. So yeah the sexism was off the charts
happy pride month! Reminder to Catholics + all who are hosting pride events, panels, media things that if your representation of 🌈 is only cis white gay men (or allies, ex. straight but LGBT-affirming theologians), you should probably rethink that.
the school-wide Notre Dame Right to Life Mass this year began their homily with the same statistic on gun violence, and then the priest said “you might think that’s a lot, but that’s not that many at all compared to the # of abortions…”
i was livid and I am livid today
when I asked my pro life mom about the 3000 children who die every year from gun violence she rolled her eyes and said “that’s not that many.” we cannot work with republicans. we have to work around them.
I was at a gay bar last night here in Denver and experienced so much queer joy & celebration. Today I wake up to the news of my queer siblings killed an hour away in another gay club. Lord have mercy on your beloved children! Heal us and bring those who hate us to repentance!
I hope that all the progressive Catholics who are so open to blessing queer people in theory are equally open to blessing actual gay ppl/couples in practice when they are asked to, and not like “omg I can’t I would get into trouble”
Today I went to Mass w at a women's religious community and I don't think there were any lay men present at the beginning of Mass, so during the confiteor the priest said "and you my sisters, to pray for me" instead of "and you my brothers and sisters." It felt good to hear that!
Our apartment’s repairman legit called my girlfriend and I “roommates” when he came over the apartment today for some repairs.
Y’all, we share a studio apartment with exactly one (1) bed. 😂
@USCCB
What about the religious freedom of LGBTQ Catholics to survive, thrive, and be the fullest version of themselves? It seems that you’ve once again chosen the path of cowardice and fear, over affirming the human dignity of all, as our church and our gospel teaches.
I feel like one of the reasons why I haven’t been going to Mass is just that I don’t have anyone to go with? Most people at the parish I go to are either families w children or religious sisters, so when I go by myself I rarely know/ talk to anyone, and that’s just really hard.
One time someone asked me why I don’t become Episcopalian and I responded with “because Episcopalians don’t care about the poor” and I second that message today
@TheGrantHartley
So sad! Pray that the friend will embrace his Christian identity beyond these false ideologies. (This is why I prefer ppl like your friend using the term "Christian with opposite-sex attractions".) But alas, we can love the sinner but hate the sin! 🙏
Was hanging out with a friend who is a Catholic priest earlier and he asked me, a lay woman, to say a prayer and blessing over him (with the sign of the cross and everything). Idk, I’m very touched? We need more priests like this in the church + the world.
Non-romantic love should be normalized in our society. Today I really miss my dearest friend who recently moved to the border to work at a migrant shelter. I miss her because I love her very very deeply & I think it’s okay to love our friends this deeply, actually.
“hey professors I need to get out of my comprehensive exams slightly early because Nobel Peace Prize winner + very cool Filipino journalist Maria Ressa is on campus and I need to go meet with her”— literally me on Tuesday
(TY Liu Institute/Keough School for this opportunity!)
6 more days until my theology comprehensive exams! currently accepting:
- prayers
- home cooked meals
- snacks
- my comps committee to not ask me a question on derrida
tfw when you attend a catholic theology program and have to text your class friends before class like "yo guys im going to talk about gay shit in class today. back me up if anyone in class is super homophobic." 🙃
Another day, another white man being condescending to me in my mentions by telling me that he is disappointed in what I tweet and telling me that the church wouldn't take me seriously.
Yes, this is a subtweet.
So, sometimes I get interesting “fan mail” in my university mailbox from folks who read my writings at
