Convergence towards a bigger market gets you a better deal. UK wanted to *diverge*. Let's say eg Suriname wanted a trade deal with UK but said we want to diverge from your standards. Would UK be "inflicting a punishment beating" by making its border controls harder here? @afneil
Yip. Almost none necessary. And none demanded by Britain. But all insisted on by EU because it wanted to inflict a punishment beating on the UK. Yet in other FTAs it has agreed on mutual recognition of standards. Not UK. Wonder why.

None of this is hard to understand.. But yet here we still are with Brexiters moaning Brexit not done "properly" or that the EU somehow "punishing" us for giving us results of what *we* wanted (to diverge) & didn't want (convergence, for easier trading & movement across borders)
