I've lived in 5 states, mostly small towns. Tried a 3 month stint in the office during year 7, just to see what I was missing. They're loud and full of distractions and it lead to a majjor productivity hit.

Is it building on real hardware? People don't get to complain if the thing is on real hardware. On the arm64 simulator? 3. Solid. Weeks. To get to the %files section. Where it then crashed with some trivial file issues. 3. More. Weeks.

ohai, I don't check twitter much (Maston is much more pleasant), but I will say I have mad respect for people who take the trouble to be informed, then call it like they see it. Carl does this. Also, I've even seem him integrate new information into prior opinions. Amazing!

If you could just rant about things for about 20 minutes, then spend another 20 on what actually makes sense, i'd go that to one every time. Followed by 10 minutes of Q&A where everything is treated as a yes/no question.

Developed, as in additional training, opportunities, responsibilities and so forth. It is a key aspect of career progression. Couldn't disagree more about individuals being expendable. That is some seriously toxic thinking.

I promise to say nice things if you buy Atlassian, then open source Jira DataCenter. :-) Seriously though, if you want to change the narrative you have to provide a new narrative, backed by action. Senior leadership changes provide a good time to do this.

The RHEL8 Beta package set is largely derived from Fedora 28, with pieces from Fedora 29 and misc upstreams such as 4.18

I sure hope so- talk about unlocking potential! At the same time I wouldn't mind us learning from IBM about organizational scale. RH is 40x larger than when I joined. Growing 30x from here? Incredible.

I think people are picturing something like rawhide, when the reality is there is no point in time when untested work is allowed in. It's why lead time is longer than you'd guess, even for trivial changes.

We do this in RHEL on demand for certain libraries: compat-libthis and compat-libthat. In RHEL 8 we've started doing it for select applications as well. Wouldn't it be nice if we could do this for more than a select few?

These layoffs amounted to double-digit percentages. Some of them were admins who were made redundant through acquisitions, some of them were engineers who didn't like change, some were people in countries we didn't want offices in anymore (where I learned "garden leave")

Oh, I know, don't start what you can't finish. That's why I'll include plenty of scotchbrite wheels. We'll start at 30 grit and work our way up to a beautiful, mirror finish! There won't be a single spot of that unfortunate black coating left.

Why is fedora's libfoo different than opensuse's libfoo? Who is that benefiting? I'll tell you who: Everybody who has an incentive to see Linux distributions fail. Because it's a nightmare for developers, a distraction for upstream, and a treasure trove for CVE exploiters.
