Yup, I did a PD in Europe and saved around $100,000 on childcare over 4 years and my husband and I took 14 months of parental leave with our 2nd child. And. Free. Healthcare.
European institutions provide much better salaries in locations with lower cost of life, with free health care, up to 1 year parental leave, affordable day-care, free and high quality education for kids, and many more benefits. Please consider European labs for potential postdocs

Having kids in grad school/during a post-doc in academia makes it really hard to find time to exercise! I basically didn't do it at all for years. What finally worked for me was combining exercise with commuting and taking my children places. I cycle 95% of the time.

! We did voltage imaging in different output compartments of horizontal cells to look at visual signal processing.
