On the topic of boycotting conferences in states where abortion is illegal. Let's be clear, the reason to avoid these states for conferences should be to protect the pregnant people at your conference 1/

Any person capable of childbearing could have an emergency related to pregnancy at your conference, at your seminar series, at your summer course. Your event should not be held in a place where your childbearing colleagues might be put at risk 13/

But it never occurred to me at that time to check whether I would have safe access to abortion-related medical care in the chance I would need it in an emergency, such as an ectopic pregnancy. 9/

And this is not the only type of academic travel situation where pregnancy could be a factor in the decision to travel. A friend of mine was pregnant while on the job market and was spotting during her interviews 11/

She visited an OB during her interviews to make sure she wasn't miscarrying. Her family has a history of miscarriages. Her child is healthy and everything is fine. But if she had been miscarrying, she would have been able to receive medical care to protect her own life. 12/

Many people take "non-traditional" career paths in academia. @Brixius_Simone , @mm5200 , @MoeNeuro and I did! We wrote for @PLOSBiology about how non-linear careers are increasingly common, but funding agencies and search committees penalize these paths.

@_kelsmallen 's paper is out now on BioRxiv. This is Kelsey's first, first-author and the start of some great things to come. The entire paper is best summarized by this enjoyable video of a mouse "experiencing" this cricket for the first time :)
