Some good news: the NIH has now reinstated my R35 since the termination was found unconstitutional (still waiting on NSF), though the government continues to withhold the contractually obligated funds
Yesterday, the NIH R35 “Outstanding Investigator” grant to fund scientists in my lab studying antibiotic resistance was terminated for reasons not related to the content of the science, or any actions taken by me or members of my lab

How rough of a childhood did folks like Ben have to think so cynically of humanity? Genuinely sad to see this sort of attention-seeking, esp when its baked into a marketing strat. Obv this is a symptom of an increasingly apathetic populace. We can do better. We must do better.

This is an amazing story of scientific progress When it was first described, life expectancy in cystic fibrosis was about 7 months Today, since discovery of the causative gene (CFTR) and therapies that modulate it (like Trikafta), life expectancy is almost normal

No match for zymo shield tho! It denatured it so fast even through the bacterial cell. 1mL spindown of two fluorescent protein cell lines. Right pair is FuGFP. Left tube of each pair is water neg control. Resuspended in 500uL of either water or Zymo DNA Shield. Lost color in secs

Amazing how resilient a superfolder gfp is to harsh conditions. FuGFP on far right. Big fan of this one. Glows even when in alkaline lysis buffer!

Kimi Ishizaki, a professor of Kobe University told me that axenically cultured Marchantia polymorpha is edible in raw! Today, our students compared the taste of three species of Marchantia: M. polymorpha, M. pinnata, and M. quadrata.

Yay, got a few agrobacterium colonies for my RUBY + cas9 plasmid! Gonna work on a nice hello world crispr experiment where you transform a petunia with this construct and then do a secondary transform with guide RNA targetting the RUBY. Stable line expressing cas9 and visual KO.

Your ship lands softly on a bed of grass 20m from a research station that went dark 5 days ago. Your clients asked you to investigate the outage and report back any anomalies. The ship airlock depressurizes and you walk onto the strange Moon's surface. What do you do?
