The implications in terms of accountability are discussed. This paper digs into the role of investigations in producing a crisis within the political system: it's part of @demope_project. We thank @ParideCarrara for data collection and many colleagues for useful suggestions.(7/7).

Notice that our findings hold only for corruption crimes and not for opinion crimes, since politicians charged with opinion crimes might enjoy higher reputation among their constituencies, who share similar opinions (that's what #Trump is trying to do right now!).(6/7).

The political leaker digs dirt especially closer to the elections: politically-initiated corruption RAP issued in the last month before election day concern crimes that date approximately 680–700 days farther in.the past compared to politically-initiated RAP issued earlier.(5/7)

We also found evidence of a dirt-digging process: when the investigation is exploited by a political leaker, the time between the crimes and the date of the RAP is longer. The informer digs up dirt in the past to find old misbehavior that can be used against the rivals.(4/7)

When a party weakens, the likelihood that political enemies denounce past misbehavior of members of the weakened party increases, to give the "coup de grâce" to a party's power in a local stronghold. (3/7)

We analyze the politics behind judicial investigations (RAP) by leveraging new data on prosecutors' informants (leaker) in 1125 episodes of misbehavior of Italian MPs involved in different crimes (1983–2019). (2/7)
