@GIMedOnc @NiuSanford If we talk about mortality, even with the increasing mortality rate for colorectal cancer, this cannot realistically be "felt" in clinic, the rise is impossible to be clinically "detectable" by a single physician. (see screenshot: colorectal : from 2.7 to 3.1/100 000/y over 30

This is one of the hardest concepts for people to understand, from patients to doctors to scientists to biotech industry

Searching for biologic causes for this epidemic is certainly going to be fruitless at best for most cancers, and at worst find some spurious association that needlessly scares the public.

AACR is having an ENTIRE conference about early onset cancer and it appears there won't be any sessions about how this may all be largely overdiagnosis.. https://t.co/edUzFkgrkh

There is an entire narrative being created around this growing “epidemic.” But is this trend a rise in clinically lethal cancer? The short answer appears to largely be, no.

Cancer is a profound and life changing diagnosis to receive, but we also need to be clear eyed about the data. There have been a lot of alarming news stories about the rise of cancer in young people (people under 50 years old).

In the wake of the hubbub on novel promising gene therapy approval for Huntington’s disease, this video on the Sarepta debacle is a must watch. She knew. Yesterday Sarepta finally reported on their confirmatory trials : Negative.

“Whenever somebody tells you that the incidence of something is going up a lot, ask about the outcome of interest, like mortality, especially as it relates to cancer” = wise words from @AdeAdamson at the end of Q&A after he presented: "The Rise in Early-Onset Cancer in the US

Did you read the paper? LOL. We clearly explain how this line of thinking is implausible. If you actually believe what you tweeted...I have a bridge to sell you...
@vrpatel97 @JAMAInternalMed @AdeAdamson @MGBResearchNews @BrighamSurgery So of course mortality has decreased! We are much, much better at treating breast cancer. If we didn't do any screening or treatment, the mortality would have increased just as much as incidence has!

The epidemic of cancer in young Americans is more apparent than real. Always fun working with @vrpatel97 and HGW, pushing back against a potentially harmful narrative.
