this will not impact the length of a prisoner’s sentence or their maximum sentence for certain offences but will reduce the court case backlog and reduce the remand prisoner population. It will also free up 2000 sitting days

Announced that Magistrate sentencing powers will be increased back to 12 mnths imprisonment, up from the current 6 months. An SI will be laid to this effect on the 28th October and come into force on 18th November 2025.

Said the Crown Court backlog is creating a ballooning remand prison population to soar, with prisoners unable to be moved elsewhere. She argued capacity issues need rectifying and the remand population will be targeted to increase capacity.

A quick update from LC @ShabanaMahmood's statement today on sitting days and prisons: - Noted that the Government was forced to allow the release of certain prisoners after serving 40% of their sentence due to the crisis, and would try to avoid having to repeat this. 🧵

As a Group, we stand in solidarity with migrants and refugees who have sought safety here, only to be met with violence. We stand in solidarity with all those who are supporting them through the provision of legal and other services. The law is here for us all.

We are saddened by the horrific and tragic events in Southport last week and our deepest sympathies to those families affected. We also condemn, in the strongest terms, the racist, anti-migrant, Islamophobic, and far-right violence we are currently witnessing.
