It's been too cold outside, my daughter's being entertained by her grandparents, so I've had a day task designing 👍
These need rearranging but I'm pretty chuffed with this recognising like terms activity for Y7, can anyone think of some good q's I might have missed?
#mathschat
"Fill in the blanks activities are one of the most simple ways to get students thinking and reasoning mathematically" is a hill I'm willing to die on.

Partly because angles questions are annoying to make 🤕and partly to show our booklets at
@astreaacademies
, I'm sharing my recent contribution to our curriculum on properties of diagonals in quadrilaterals👍

The quality of
@draustinmaths
’s resources is incredible, and not just helped me improve my practice by giving them out for free but also gave me ideas on how to better ask questions. The depth and challenge is superb.

My Y10's have just finished two big units on number and algebra, so I'm creating starters this week looking at expressions with the same value but different in appearance...
#mathschat
Today was a good day though, I was observed with Y10's on areas of sectors, and bless them they bossed the shaded areas challenge task I made 😎

This year I wanted all my Do-Nows to all have an "open ended" challenge question for my scholars to attempt if they finished earlier, like below:

I became a father for the second time on Sunday 😄
Not that it wasn’t already known but I just want to say that midwives/nurses/support workers/our entire NHS do an absolutely incredible job ⭐️💙
Thought i had a mini epiphany today when I did multiples of square numbers before simplifying surds. Seemed to make the process less cognitively demanding 🧠
#mathschat
I’ve created a “starting strong” for some of our foundation pupils ready for Wednesday morning to *hopefully* help them navigate/feel comfortable with the first few pages of the Edexcel paper. Free for all below if it helps 😊
#mathschat
All of
@giftedHKO
’s tasks are some of the most well thought out, intriguing and fascinating that I’ve ever seen. I used to stupidly use them as extensions, when they should be far more integrated than that 👍
#mathsconf27
Starting to make some revision resources for my AQA L2 FM students. Here's a revision clock activity (only 8 sections though 😅), never realised how annoying it is trying to make circle theorem proof questions 😵💫
#mathschat
Another AQA L2 Further Maths warm up sheet ready for Wednesday. I’ve picked topics unique to FM that didn’t appear on paper 1 as well as a nice inverse functions question.
Link here for anyone, let me know of any errors.

When I struggled more with behaviour, I remember listening to this
@mrbartonmaths
podcast with
@tombennett71
.
One thing mentioned was “pressing the reset button” (paraphrased) with difficult classes. I tried it and things improved overnight 👍
🧵
Thinking about my L2 FM booster on Thursday morning and created this in mind, focussing on the "new stuff" and without being too stressful.
Here as a pdf with answers (let me know if there's an error please 🙂) for anyone who could use it:

Meanwhile whilst the toddler naps, I had a quick idea for our common curriculum on probability vocabulary involving events and outcomes, and the differences between the two. Can anyone think of any I could have missed?
#mathschat
I've been working more on our probability booklet today and creating some tasks to address one of my personal most annoying misconceptions, what is meant by even chance...

Using Grade 1 - 3 practice papers throughout the year can be the confidence boost some of more lower attainment learners need, without limiting them in the long run. Looking forward to using these next year from Pearson.

Mind blown tonight: Other nations are have had wonderful special edition Casios. Tempted to petition
@CasioMaths
to give the UK an Alan Turing* themed one.
*Other suggestions welcome 😊

Spent a while this afternoon trying to create a graphical simultaneous equations worksheet, and it turns out its hell 🤯
If anyone wants to use what I've made here feel free, answers are on the second page.

Been thinking A LOT about workload/marking after a lot of conversations about it recently:
In only 10 years I’ve seen loads of gimmicks. SALT, WWW/EBI, triple marking, verbal feedback stamps/stickers, feedback sheets, I haven’t seen everything but I’ve seen plenty…
🧵
Minor humble brag, but a personal focus for me this year is improving my classroom routines.
I’ve shown this photo at the end of all lessons so far about my exit routines, and already chuffed after two days that everything **even the wipes and pen lids** are still there 😱😅
In 8 years Ed Plan planners haven’t changed one bit (bar the year on the front). But they’ve never put the date on their pages and I’m reminded how much I hate spending time writing them in 🤦♂️ Can’t wait to move to another brand in 2024/25 😅
#teacherproblems
Good luck to all back tomorrow 🍀whether it’s INSETs or back at the chalk face 👍
An extra good luck to those (like me) starting new schools/new roles, we’ve got this 😎

*Mustn’t buy a book today*
*Mustn’t buy a book today*
*Mustn’t buy a book today*
*caves* 😐
Still, looking forward to reading this

I did accidentally refer to a decimal button on a calculator as a “full stop” button though today 😅 Highly embarrassing and probably should never be allowed to do any maths ever again. 🛑

1) Is it easy to get started?
2) Does it build confidence?
3) Does it provide challenge?
4) Does it address misconceptions?
5) Is it ‘good value’?
6) Other misc things (Assumed Knowledge, Motivation…)
@draustinmaths
talking about how she creates her worksheets.
@Lucyjc1612
I’ve stopped saying “double check your work” etc and gone onto “if you’ve got time, do the question again and see if you get the same answer”
It took some reenforcing but I saw more kids redoing work and I felt there were fewer minor calculation errors.
So
@JennyHillParker
has suggested that Non-examples in Frayer Models should be correct definitions “but in different domains”. I love this idea for distinguishing between our mathematical use for a word and its other uses.

Really enjoyed
@StudyMaths
’s behaving mathematically session. Some wonderful ideas on systematic listing, prime factor decomposition and palindromes 🤓

My shout out is for
@goteachmaths
- brilliant resources.
Always feel (and still do) that one of the biggest barriers to achievement in maths at the lower end is reading ability.
@whisto_maths
is talking about it now too.
#TMMathsIcons
Taking a bit of a leap, and I’m going to be talking about what I’ve done in my own practice as I became a bit more aware I was taking my “expertise” for granted. Looking forward to it! 😄

100% this. Homework should serve as extra independent practice, and that will always be worthwhile. Just because there’s no perfect way to set it doesn’t mean none should be set at all.
In maths, setting some questions on recent learning can’t be beat 👍
Homework…
I continue to see people comment that it’s a waste of time
I disagree
Homework is important
What’s key is what is set & why. There’s relevant hw that reinforces the learning & there’s hw that’s a total waste of time & adds little value
What, why, purpose is key

Teaching should not just be rocking up at 8:30 and leaving at 3:10. Getting what’s right for my class takes more than that. But we’ve still got to keep improving workload. And please god let’s not go anywhere back to the old days 😅
End 🧵
As much as i’m missing the social aspect... Its not bad confing in the comfort of your home. Especially when you’ve just ordered a maccies too 🍟

Does anybody have any links to resources for repeated percentage change **that’s not compound interest** e.g. growth and decay by any chance please?

Reasons I wish I knew more science No. 435. Genetic Diagrams having such a direct link to Sample Space Diagrams. Going to improve my SSD lessons loads incorporating these.

Plenty of positives I’ve took this term including:
- Vast improvements taking into account prior knowledge from KS2 in Year 7
- Even better atomisation of topics making it easier identify where misconceptions lie.
- Still got a full set of Stabilo black pens 👍😎
#mathschat
Picked my
#mathsconf27
choices finally. However the actual things I’m looking forward to:
1) Inevitable end of corridor hotel room 😔
2) The wonderful group of people I have met and got to known from several of these 😊
3) Free pens 🖊
After some sad news, I was reminded I hadn’t done this in far too long. Managed to book an appointment last night, 2pm slot, done by 2:25pm. All the kitkats and orange juice you can manage after. A text a few days later about where it’s been used. If you can, do
