the SENDCo role is far broader than this & they can work, as they should if they were a teaching based SENDCo, with relevant T and L leads.

I do think the SENDCo has to be someone working in a school but I don’t think it needs to be a teaching based role. Given the size & scale of the role now I also question if the SENDCo should have a teaching timetable. I get arguments around understanding T and L but.

I do think if there’s a serious drive to support SEND then the insistence that a SENDCo must be a teacher should be revised. I’ve seen & worked with some stellar support staff who would make for amazing SENDCos but can’t have the badge. This seems madness to me.

Those who are anti suspension/exclusion…. How would you strip this with the victim’s parents or a colleague who has been attacked? . What will you do if you receive a no notice Ofsted safeguarding inspection as people don’t believe you can keep the school safe?.

Some want to sensationalise the latest PEX stats. If we take it that there 3400 secondary schools in England we are talking about an average of 3 PEXes per school per year. As a % of the entire pupil population nationally it’s 0.11%. Small numbers!.

At what point will the discussion shift to the impact excluded pupils have had on the education & welfare of the other pupils & staff, including staff recruitment & retention & disproportionate use of school resource. Not enough is said about this.

Some of the criticisms of this Head’s approach are baffling. We have a major SEND provision issue that’s not going to be solved soon. This Head is doing something about it as there aren’t lots of cards in the pack to play. Should he do nothing? Well done.

A key issue is that so many people have accessed these before they’re professionally ready that it’s almost devalued them. A recalibration is needed.

I’d love to see a report detailing the impact persistent breaches of school policy has on the learning, environment & outcomes for all the other children & the morale, motivation, recruitment & retention of staff. 10K PEXes / 9mn kids is small numbers!.

✍️ The DfE has published a 150-page 'writing framework' for primary schools, with a focus on handwriting, getting children to speak aloud and reception. But the document will have to be revised following publication of the curriculum review.
