Am fellow indie author, and this can be painful. The line between being supportive but critical and unreasonable one way or the other is thin. I've also noticed a pattern where readers are a lot more generous in ratings and reviews than writers.

On the one hand, I judge this harshly. On the other hand, there are a lot of horror stories of creepy guys roleplaying sexual assault on other people's characters or whatever. This is a little bit easier and simpler than having to kick Grimey out halfway through, I guess.

I've also noticed that people tend to conflate "morally grey" with "completely amoral". Some of the things modern "heroes" get up to while the writers still expect them to be rooted for unconditionally is a little insane. (1)
