Using very high-resolution (25 cm) aerial imagery and a deep learning approach based on U-Net, we mapped 20 000 km of artificial drains in peatlands at a fine scale with high accuracy. The resulting...

And just like the good old Dublin Bus, you wait ages for one, and then two come along at the same time! Two of the papers I contributed to over the past year were published this week: 1. https://t.co/hGpcN6Z1Pb 2. https://t.co/35oUbV82yu

I'm thrilled to see this paper out, which I co-led with @DitchOntologist, and featuring input from loads of excellent co-authors. It's our interdisciplinary perspective on ditches; what they do, why they matter, and how we should look after them. https://t.co/eKzTKzUwT6

How does degradation alter the spatial variability of peat properties? Is it linked with ecosystem homogenisation? Check out our new paper "Flatlining fens?..." #PeatTwitter

Land use change requires longterm supports for farmers. This article suggests that Irish authorities are considering offering farmers a lump sum & supports over 15yr cycles to manage water tables for carbon i.e. "rewetting." This would be a breakthrough https://t.co/5abtBkXKtI

There are 80,000ha to be rewetted or extensified over the coming years under contracts agreed over a 15-year timeframe.

Modeling is great...but still quite inaccurate, particularly at smaller scale, ie <1 hectare, which is the scale many important habitats exist these days. This long-established sessile oak woods is noted as scrub, and the birch woods across the valley isn't picked up at all.

New research on midlands raised bogs finds: 2,460 ha of cutaway bog are in SACs (protected areas). Peat extraction (cutaways & cutovers) in the midlands cover 119,000 ha, 70% higher than what is being reported for ALL peatlands in 🇮🇪 https://t.co/lOKJWtmX3A
