(3/n) So... we use Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) to look at them at the nanoscale. 🔬 How? We electrospray them to gas-phase🕊️, deposit them intact on surface using #ESIBD ... and image them using #STM at 11 K! 👀🥶🥶🥶

(4/n) What can we see with STM? Let's start with simple #glycopeptide . We can: 1. Distinguish glycans from peptides! 😎 2. And even distinguish Glucose from Galactose (they differ only by 1 stereoconfiguration i.e. -OH at C4) 🤯

However, this low throughput originates from many manual steps in finding molecules, sharpening the tip, and analysis.

This is a very impressive paper from @mpifkf ! They report the synthesis of *single crystals* of Pb10−xCux(PO4)6O with x ~ 1 ("LK-99") using TSFZ without any sulfur (or Cu2S) impurities. TL;dr the crystals are transparent, diamagnetic insulators.

@mglerner @ScienceMagazine Hi Michael, yes, these are all STM images. You are correct that STM heights originate from density-of-states (i.e. ~conductivity) and physical heights. This is why it is important to do STM simulations to interpret the image. 😊
