Always great to talk to the best people when it comes to behaviour . And this was definitely no exception.
This is an absolutely superb episode for anyone who is trying to understand why the young people you are teaching or leading are behaving in the way they are. There are also useful tips and guidance. Well worth tuning in to #TinyVoiceTalks

Got to keep banging the drum even though it's the same mistakes over and over. The stats on particular academies make grim reading, the treatment of SEND children is a national scandal . why are we still making the same mistakes @bphillipsonMP.
This simple chart lifts the lid on the English schools sanctions crisis. As the numbers continue to soar since Covid, it's clear that the plan isn't working. Not enough has been done to support kids. And @educationgovuk needs to change course urgently. 🧵

The usual voices will be out . It's just lining up!. It's just a pen!. My 3 year old could do it!. Completely, and deliberately missing the point. Why would adults choose to start the day with conflict and challenge?. .
A friends child had their transition day to secondary this week. She was taught to line up on the first blow of a whistle, uniform check on the second whistle and arm up, holding the pencil case in the air on the third whistle! Is this going to be the best years of her life? 😡😡.

There will still be plenty trying to say this doesn't happen . There will still be some who don't connect the dots of starting the day with conflict and record exclusions. This practice doesn't make children feel emotionally safe, there's no foundation to build on.

Are we going to change anything to try to stem this?. Or are we going to carry on doing exactly the same expecting different results?. Or does it not even matter, coz you know, progress 8/league tables, and we'll just blame the children.
NEW: The number of suspensions and exclusions in England has reached its highest level since 2006, DfE figures show. There were 954,952 suspensions in state schools in 2023/24 - a 21% increase on the previous year - while exclusions also rose 16% to 10,885. Primary-age.

It seems that when the only tool is a hammer, every problem becomes binary . The extreme adult control or anarchy argument has seriously been done to death.
One of the red flags in the defence of hyper-controlled schools is the straw-man of order vs chaos. The idea that there can only be utter control or utter chaos. That kids are either controlled or unsafe. But in reality there are many, many types of control. A short 🧵.

I know everything has to be binary but to frame empathy as something we either have or we don't, rather than a skill we constantly develop throughout our lives is troubling . The difference between the start of my career and now are light years apart. .
@grahamchatterl2 Think framing it that adults who are teachers need training to display empathy is hugely disrespectful. Most humans can display empathy without the need for paying someone to train them to.
