This is a very succinct example of what I've been building. Developing, and then getting all the moving parts working in tandem has been a lot of fun.

In the world of infosec and IT there are a class of problems that must be ignored despite their severity because there isn't any good way to fix them. In fact, you learn to ignore them for so long you forget they even exist. Let's talk about one of them. The "Downloads" folder.

Each of these causes real human death. Often horrifically so, and on a scale far higher than a couple of cars. Running social networks connects humans. And I’m a global world, that is surprisingly fraught.

What happens when a religious state asks for the users active near a minority religious site? Or tracking data for users within contested territory?.

What happens when dissidents tweet against their authoritarian governments? What happens when the state comes asking for metadata to unmask that identity?.

It’s not the obvious thing. Nothing as simple as social media app crashes into pedestrian. Physics is easy, it’s consistent, you can work through the kinematics. But people… People are messy.

There’s been a lot of dunking on idiot tech bros for misunderstanding what’s hard about social media. But one thing I’ve seen missing, is that it absolutely can cause deaths. Failing to understand that, is failing to understand people.

Fairly solid thread of system threats to large systems. I don't know the poster, but I have seen many of these over my professional career. #SRE.

I've seen a lot of people asking "why does everyone think Twitter is doomed?". As an SRE and sysadmin with 10+ years of industry experience, I wanted to write up a few scenarios that are real threats to the integrity of the bird site over the coming weeks.

If I had to bet on whether Elon will pull through and Twitter ultimately succeeds, I’d probably still bet on the success case. Social networks are surprisingly durable. Still, there is a KNOWN playbook for how to take over a dysfunctional company and quickly turn it around. 🧵.

Interesting. I agree with the thread, in that allowing engineers to opt@out with severance, this is probably net-good. I don’t like the values change, but appreciate the transparency.
