Toon Dreesen's superb critique of a flawed procurement process for the N.C.C.'s new headquarters. RAIC et al should tame this tilt towards timidity in picking design consultants! @RAIC_IRAC @AIBCconnected @AIANational #public architecture #procurement #ncc #ottawa

Alex is absolutely right--sprawl may be the most important climate change issues in Canada (locking in energy waste for decades), but was seldom talked about in the era of cheap gas/credit for housing. Time to start! @AIBCconnected @RAIC_IRAC #sprawl #conservation #suburbia

Toronto right now, continuing to sprawl. This map is a disaster for the climate and for social mobility.

Our own Arthur Erickson was the first there with California Plaza (one of the best, and most public-minded complexes there), but the passage you underline is typical Davis, hyperbole mixed with hysteria blunting valid points.

Mike Davis on downtown LA’s Bunker Hill, and maybe a 1970/80s downtown near you: “Their denigration of street landscape, and their confiscation of so much of the vital life activity of the center… fascist obliteration of street frontage”

I hope Toronto joins Edmonton in doing this--we have long tried in Vancouver, but the idea was shunned by city councilors, planners and developers, all of them thinking a City Architect would diminish their power! @AIBCconnected @RAIC_IRAC @RAICMetroVan #vancouverism

I write about a crucial issue in architecture: who gets hired for public buildings - often the wrong people - and why.

In Toronto or in most of Canada, we don’t value public architecture, and we aren’t willing to pay for it

Heartbreaking... Edmonton is a city that eats itself (although this one is all on the Province).

The "avant garde" font chosen in the 70s for the Oilberta logo was self-consciously masculine and optimistic. Its recent replacement with a cursive font a few years ago is self-consciously feminine and more nuanced/nervous. I have no nostalgia for the avant-garde font/logo.

Process matters... @sandyjamesplan details the FC South issue well. I understand the need to work out what can work on the site but dropping a proposed form of development prior to collaborative engagement is a problem.

I watched the 'Wedding' episode of Bramwell recently - and was thrilled to find that the reception was shot in Strawberry Hill! Pioneering Gothic Revival home to Horace Walpole and setting for (parts of) the world's first Gothic novel, it's a place that #OughtToBeHaunted.
