Since apparently no one read the article, he sought counseling because he realized he put more weight into the audience’s response than his own experience in making the movie, which I think is an important lesson for anyone who makes art.
I posted this on Facebook, and my favorite professor - who had to put up with my Evangelical conservative bullshit in his political science classes - commented, “Funny.”
Okay, you know what, Greg-
My God, acknowledging and empathizing with Aaron Bushnell's desperation is not "putting suicide on a pedestal." His protest is not a representation of our "deteriorating mental health system."
Some of you will do mental gymnastics your whole life to avoid feeling uncomfortable.
It’s difficult for me sometimes to create art without worrying about how it’s going to be received. That has to be a lot harder to deal with when it’s your livelihood.
I've been telling all of you for YEARS to listen to cult survivors when they explain how you fall into stuff like this. It's not that complicated. Smart people join cults every day.
@NewWestSarah
They kind of did him dirty by calling it “trauma” in the tweet. I’m not saying it is or isn’t, but that word is bound to upset some people.
I grew up in a high-demand religion that encouraged me to have three kids by 22, and I didn’t even want that life then. You really don’t understand the treatment that comes along with being reduced to a baby-making machine.
She is only 22. Married, 3 kids and bakes her husband cinnamon rolls to surprise him. She is living the life every girl thought they would be living at that age when we were kids.
I do wish my parents had been more interested in my interests and tried to understand them. But I really don’t think you should be planning social outings for your 15-year-old, especially when they have their own phone.
This is funny to me as a former Evangelical teen. No one ever worried about kids dying during the post-Columbine martyrdom hysteria, despite the countless books, songs, sermons & videos glorifying it and pastors telling literal children that they needed to be ready to die for God
I wonder how many troubled teenagers in America right now are looking at all this “rest in power” bullshit thinking “so that’s how I can go out a hero.”
I actually think validation is a common incentive for both men and women to have casual sex. The difference is that drunken casual sex is almost never that physically pleasurable for women so for many (not all) women it’s just the validation and feeling of being attractive.
@offbeatorbit
I'm old enough to remember a few months ago when a video went around of a young stay-at-home mom living in a trailer and making dinner for her kids, and everyone called her white trash and said how sad she looked.
People like to tell you that grief gets “better,” but it really doesn’t. You grow around it like a tree grows around a fence. It stays the same size, same shape and same color, but maybe it feels a little less heavy because it suddenly becomes part of you.
I went to college with this girl who was dating a guy in his mid-20s at the time, and instead of asking her to dinner, movies, etc., he’d send her a Google Calendar invite.
Girl, that is not your boyfriend. That’s your CEO.
It’s less about intelligence and more about basic human emotions like the desire to love and be loved by others.
So if you think you’re immune to joining a cult, consider that you just might be kind of an asshole.
in documentaries about cults somebody will be like "im a lawyer. there were doctors, engineers, etc. and we all fell into the cult. no one is immune, even the smartest people." but heres the thing. i would not fall into a cult. no fucking chance. get out of here with that.
@okaypompeii
Same experience! I think it took a while for my therapist to realize I have friends and a good social life. I just don’t feel fully seen by anyone.
There is a saying “Don’t bleed on someone who didn’t cut you.”
As someone who has said and done things I regret during anxiety attacks, you still owe others an apology, and you owe it to yourself to get help.
It amazes me how confidently people will say things like "mental illness doesn't excuse bad behavior." Like okay, I get what you're saying, but surely you realize there are some colossally difficult philosophical questions at play here
If someone dies shortly after beginning chemotherapy, it’s likely that their cancer was at such an advanced stage that chemo wouldn’t have made a significant difference in their outcome.
I’m worried about how much the general public’s scientific knowledge is based on vibes.
@KMR31871
@atrupar
They peacefully sat on the ground for days, and you’re apoplectic because someone broke a window. Maybe direct your pearl-clutching to the cops who threw these kids on the ground.
@CLAUDIAPOSTING
I don’t know you, but the harassment I witnessed you receiving is why I took a long break from Twitter and why I am hardly on here now. I’m heartbroken for you and hoping you heal as best as possible. 💗
@JayElHarris
As someone whose mother was a SAHM, this video is so laughable. My dad worked outside anywhere from 40-60 hours a week year-round, and my family had a fuck-ton of problems.
@offbeatorbit
As is often said in PR, if you don’t tell your story, someone else will do it for you. This is what happens when you don’t get ahead of things!
@JayElHarris
This is really a tough thing for me to understand because when my chronic pain was at its worst, I used to sit on a stool to cook at my stove. I find it incredibly hard to believe these people can tweet but not make a microwave meal.
The way some people on here talk about sex is baffling to me.
I was raised Evangelical, did not have sex until I got married at 24 and then dated for really the first time at 27. If *I* am saying you have a weird view of sex, with love and light, talk to a professional.
The woman in the original video is Mormon. Women in Mormonism, Evangelicalism, etc., are treated as inferior long before they even have kids.
Try having a need of any type in that culture and find out how little you matter to people you thought loved you.
@hecubian_devil
So to everyone saying Baldwin should be sued for his negligence as a producer, he already was, and that was settled in 2022. He’s been charged with manslaughter because ballistics analysis showed he had to have pulled the trigger for the gun to fire.
Everyone engaging in the DoorDash/ableism discourse now knows what it’s like being in a chronic illness support group.
You say something worked for you, and here come five people to tell you it didn’t work for them and you should feel bad about it.
sex is ridiculous. he is literally just poking himself in and out of you, making some stupid face, until some goo comes out. and if he's wearing protection the goo goes into a little plastic bag, and then he has to go dispose of the goo bag. it's not a serious endeavor. grow up.
Even if Aaron Bushnell did struggle with mental illness, what difference does that make? How does that detract from his message? Nothing he *said* in his video was outlandish or incoherent.
Playing up his supposed mental illness is just meant to dehumanize him.
I’m sorry, but every time I see this, I just laugh and cry and laugh and laugh. You put up with your teeth rattling for an hour just to get a racist-looking tattoo with a racist-looking placement, ANNNND it looks like it was done with a squiggle pen.
Every conservative Christian woman thinks their life will be different, but until you leave the religion, it isn’t. Doesn’t matter what choices you make. You’ll always, in every circumstance, be a lesser person compared to a man.
Women are like, definitely less likely to orgasm from casual sex tho. Not surprisingly. This is not something I made up. And when I say something is done for validation, that’s not necessarily bad. Validation feels nice!
I also just don't think it's a narrative we should be pushing because it's 1) subjective and 2) contributes to a culture that has historically shamed women who enjoy sex.
I saw someone say these artists need to make their shows 21+, and it’s very funny to me that some of you think these aren’t whole-ass adults doing this weird shit.
i wont be nice about it, yall are so weird for barking, meowing and just overall yelling weird stuff at mitski concerts like asking her to have your babies.u ppl need to start acting normal and if u wanna have a viral tiktok moment that bad, just post a clip of ur cat and move on
It’s not even about “mental health awareness.” They see people with mental illnesses as subhuman.
Here are a few comments made about my own mental health left by people wringing their hands about “glorifying suicide.”
