Just your friendly neighborhood English teacher turned librarian here to remind you that literacy has always been political.

Many, including myself, have been saying this for years. We saw this coming from a mile away.

No one asked me, but it is fascinating watching Reading First get analyzed (again) on Sold a Story 20 years after it happened -- and my distinct sense is that we are in danger of the same thing happening again. My take, from someone who reported on it a lonnnnggg time ago 1/n

NAEP note for the day: Please understand that gains over time (or losses) seem to depend on initial level (quite significantly). The lower you start, the easier it is to show bigger gains and vice versa. This explains many of the supposed "miracles."

Interesting to hear Steve Bannon grilling the founder of Moms for Liberty this week about why the group fared so poorly last week. She didn't have an answer but I do: education is a major weakness for MAGA

Graveyard in full effect, we are here at the PEP fighting corporate curriculum mandates and the continued privatization of important curriculum work that NYCDOE used to do in-house! Come join us at 100 Hester St.

Remote work is not a distraction. It's a chance to concentrate. Government workers were 28% more productive on days when supervisors assigned them tasks to do at home, because they were more focused. The office is good for interaction, but it's not always ideal for deep work.

As a disabled law professor who has benefited from accommodations, I vehemently reject this article's claims. The rise in accommodations isn't fraud—it's progress. It means more disabled students are accessing higher education. This is cause for celebration, not suspicion. (1/5)

My latest about disability accommodations in higher ed for @chronicle @ChronicleReview. It's a very controversial topic, to say the least, and inspires strong opinions. I hope this will help shift the conversation in a productive direction: https://t.co/UvmBozA0ne

With many initiatives in their beginning implementation stages, I’m curious to see where the city goes from here. Teachers will continue to be blamed for this administration’s failures, which include failed policy and the spread of misinformation related to literacy.
