Mother. Alderwoman Chicago 20th Ward. Grassroots Organizer. Dyett Hunger Striker. When you bring the community with you, you can’t go wrong.
#TruthToPower
I first applied for an affordable housing voucher in 1993.
I finally got a call back in 2004 to tell me my son who just graduated high school couldn’t be on my lease.
Today in 2022 I finally got a letter telling me I made it to the top of the waiting list. I have no words.
29 years. I have no words for how this system continues to fail our communities and those in need of stable, AFFORDABLE housing. In those 29 years the housing crisis in Chicago has only gotten worse.
This is my lived experience this is what keeps me in this fight. NO ONE should have to wait 29 years to get what should be a basic right in the richest country in the world.
Because this my experience, I don’t take campaign contributions from private developers. I want to be accountable to my community period.
Here’s one way you can support our work in Chicago:
Protect all Black women means protect all Black women. Period. The Mayor's office does not get to try and dismiss the case of Anjanette Young and then carry on business as usual.
I and 11 other parents and organizers did not go on a 34 day hunger strike to save Dyett High School just for the man
@RahmEmanuel
who tried to close a majority Black neighborhood school to be appointed as an ambassador.
This was not about the appointment. This is about the Mayor’s corporate counsel not working for the people and trying to deny what is due to Anjanette Young after the injustices she faced at the hands of CPD.
Let’s be clear the community started this conversation and they should have the final say over civilian control of the police. They only thing the Mayor can take credit for is delaying this process while CPD brutalizes our people. 🧵
Lightfoot says she will put together her own proposal for civilian police review. It's something that "I started the conversation about in this city five years ago." Won't say how her proposal will differ from GAPA and CPAC proposal to give civilian panel final say on policy.

I’m thinking about the Black and brown youth of Chicago. These young people have constantly been a force of change and love.
Y’all can talk about honoring Dr. King’s legacy all you want, but the young people of this city LIVE his legacy. Peace and blessings ❤️
We knew back in April that the Mayor’s office shouldn’t be trusted to actually get these resources to our communities. We have to do better for our people.
BREAKING NEWS: A departmental breakdown shared with aldermen last week shows that, of the $403 million in discretionary federal funds provided to the city COVID-19 direct response, more than $280 million (!!!) went to the Chicago Police Department.

Last time I checked I’m still a member of the Black caucus. Rahm Emanuel (
@RahmEmanuel
) still closed schools in Black and brown neighborhoods, closed public mental health clinics and covered up the murder of a child.
He does not have my support.
“Part of me is ashamed, because I’m made to feel ashamed for asking for assistance when I really needed it. But the city should feel ashamed, because it took them 29 years,” said Taylor
Election Day is tomorrow-vote for
@Brandon4Chicago
! Like I said in Feb, "In this city, the fifth floor has not made Black and Brown, poor and working class people a priority...I’m looking to change that, which is why I’m supporting Brandon Johnson for Mayor."
#BrandonIsBetter
I say this all the time, I don't care if it's Beyoncé or Queen Elizabeth unchecked power is dangerous to this democracy. We've got to stand up for what's right.
“I didn’t come from the Democratic Party, I came from these people in these neighborhoods, who supported me,” Taylor said. “It’s my job to listen to them and stick up for them.”
“You create equity by listening and working with the people you expect to roll out the plan." CPS and Mayor Lightfoot need to listen to our educators. I will always listen and stand with
@CTULocal1

THREAD 🧵With the end of
#BHM
we must remember that the stories of Fred Hampton, Flo Kennedy and other Black trailblazers are OUR story. A story that we all continue to write. Take a moment to appreciate and support our people on the ground doing work in our communities.
Rahm didn’t care about our youth when he closed over 100 schools on the South and West sides of Chicago. He didn’t care about the our lives and our communities when he covered up the murder of Laquan McDonald. He can not be trusted to care about anything besides himself.
Derrick Curtis (
@aldcurtis18
) blocked an ordinance to provide real ressources and public safety for our Black and brown youth in Chicago.
Shame on him and shame on a system that continues to fail our young people.
BLOCKED, from advancing: the peace book ordinance from
@GKMC18
, which would divert some of the budget for the Chicago Police Department to fund violence prevention measures.
We have the
#AnjanetteYoung
ordinance created with the input of the communities most harmed by CPD. I’m going to stand with those communities to make sure we protect the Black women and every resident of this city.
Today, I received my COVID-19 vaccine from Dr. Maya Green at Howard Brown Health Center right in the 20th Ward.
This vaccine is not just about protecting ourselves it’s also about protecting our communities.

I along with members of the education committee sent a letter to the education chair Michael Scott and Mayor Lightfoot to have a committee hearing around the reopening and a update on remote learning in November .. check your facts 😏
Too often development in our communities happens to us and NOT with us. Now is the time bring our neighbors to the table with city leaders and do development differently for our communities.
Help support CTU by writing the Illinois General Assembly and Governor J.B. Pritzker and tell them to pass HB 2275, which would restore the Chicago Teachers Union's collective bargaining rights.
“Taylor is now working with the Chicago Housing Initiative coalition to pass an ordinance that she believes can help address the long waits required to get into affordable housing.”
We are going to pass the Accountable Housing and Transparency Ordinance!
I am eager to work with
@chipublichealth
to promote vaccination in a way that is sensitive to the concerns that many communities, including my own, hold based on our past and present mistreatment in the healthcare system. My door is open for a conversation when you are ready.
So much love for
@GKMC18
who have BEEN out in our communities doing mutual aid, doing the organizing needed in our communities and reaching young people.
our hoods & bringing the fight to city council! We believe
@taylorfor20th
will fight tooth & nail to stop gentrification, secure affordable housing, create job development & give youth a platform like she’s doing at
@DyettArtsHS
so she’s getting our vote for the 20th ward!
You know in the spirit of Black History Month, let’s take a history lesson on just how long folks in this city have been fighting for civilian control of CPD.

I am one of thousands of Black women in Chicago who have experienced systematic, life-threatening discrimination at the hands of the medical establishment.
We're proud to announce that our elected officials
@taylorfor20th
and
@RobertJPeters
support our union! They've been and will continue to be important partners. More importantly, they're incredible advocates for our communities and for workers everywhere.
"Ms. Young, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I also want you to remember, while you did this for yourself, sisters like Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd and Breonna Taylor thank you as well. Because unlike them, you are alive to speak your truth."
Save the date and tell your friends about my next fundraiser on March 21st at 6.30PM! I’ll be hosting a night of jokes and Jeopardy. Hope you can make it!
These conversations didn't start with Mayor Lightfoot. They began decades ago in response to Chicago's police abuse and brutality. Citizens Alert was just one organization doing this work, with origins dating back to the late 60s. Afro-American Patrolmen's League was another.
Let me get this straight .. so in every major city in the United States is in an uproar over police brutality and the answer is to give more money to the police 😐

And let’s not forget the founding of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression in 1973 in Chicago. A group that has continue to advocate for civilian control of the police since its creation!
A quick Google search takes you to an interview where Howard Saffold, one of the founding members of the Afro American Patrolman’s League a group formed in the 1968, commented on how the group advocated for oversight body over the police.
As I said to city council, before Trayvon Martin and before Eric Garner there was Emmett Till. This year we start Black History Month by cementing the legacy of Emmet Till and his courageous mother, Mamie Till-Mobley in our community.

Two lives were lost and several others injured in Park Manor yesterday. My prayers go out to the people killed, their families, loved ones, and the surrounding community impacted by this traumatic event. Tragedies like this one are only made worse by the ongoing crisis, COVID-19.
Although this is a sad day, we should remember that of all days on Good Friday miracles are possible. We know our friends at Antioch Missionary Baptist will rebuild from the ashes, and we will do all we can to help make that happen ❤️

The fight and strength of Harold Washington and his tireless supporters continues to inspire me today. May he rest in power but also in peace knowing that he dedicated his life to our communities.
Harold Washington: A Centennial Reflection is now on display at Harold Washington Library Center! This exhibit commemorates what would have been the 100th birthday of Chicago's first African American mayor and highlights his lasting impact.
