I learned to ride a bike for the first time last years at age 42 thanks to the
@ChicagoDOT
Bike Ambassador Adult learners program.
A year later, I’m riding with the Consulate General of The Netherlands to discuss our bike infrastructure and find ways to improve it. What a ride!
One of the most inexpensive ways to address the influx of new arrivals to the US is to give them work authorization. Full stop.
Not only do you save money, you stimulate the economy and increase the tax base. People become self sufficient pretty quickly and we all benefit.
1/So in Chicago, a police officer who hangs out with, engaged online with, and shares the mindset of the Proud Boys - a known hate group - doesn’t get fired for lying about it, but some want to rebuild trust between police and communities of color?
Tomorrow, I will be introducing an ordinance requiring that CTA and it’s President attend quarterly hearings to report progress to the council. Many thanks to the organizers on the ground for voicing their concerns!
@ctaaction
I appreciate the framing, and yes on the local level we did not create the crisis. As an imperialist nation that intentionally destabilized other countries for its own profit, we kind of did, however. The folks who come to the US are a consequence of our past interventions.
Dear Chicagoans. Please remember that we did NOT create this crisis. As a city we have created hella crisis before, but the “migrant issue” isn’t ours. Those folks getting sent here. Be mad at the ppl sending them here by the bus loads, not each other. Not about this
Gov. Greg Abbott’s press sec Andrew Mahaleris says TX's 1st migrant flight left El Paso Tues, landed in Chicago w/ 120+ passengers. Says this is retaliation for Mayor Brandon Johnson’s bus crackdown & going forward, “we are expanding our operation to include flights to Chicago.”
You know what I hear from teachers? That they don’t want to strike. They have bills to pay and kids to teach. They feel that they HAVE to strike to make sure that they can have adequate support for what’s most important - the kids and families. Let’s not lose sight of that.
Today, we voted to keep Chicago a Sanctuary City. Proud to stand with my colleagues to defend Chicago’s legacy as a welcoming city that protects and cares for our undocumented residents.
Proud to have introduced this ordinance, passed yesterday by City Council. Special thanks to the
#40thWard
's Jessica Peters, Chief of Staff, and to Geoffrey Cubbage, Policy and Econ. Development Director for their work in making this happen.
Chicago shouldn’t be in the business of evicting people, much less during a cold winter.
Families, including women and children who are in CPS, will end up on the street and lead to even larger costs for the city. This is inhumane and wrong.
1,929 migrants could be evicted from city shelters Feb. 1, and another 961 people could be evicted Feb. 2.
By the end of next month, city officials are set to evict 6,239 migrants from city shelters, according to data provided to
@WTTW
News.
As Chair of the Committee, and someone who had been against Gardaworld and the Basecamp strategy, I am grateful for
@GovPritzker
intervening to make sure we put the health and safety of people first.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker said the state is ending development of a proposed migrant camp in Brighton Park following the city of Chicago’s release of an environmental report that showed the location required cleanup of heavy metals and toxic chemicals.
Great ride on the Green Line this morning, one of the many lines and routes serving people, so that people can better serve and enjoy our city.
I’m committed to our commuters and transit workers, and to making public transit safe, efficient and reliable to keep Chicago moving.
For our folks sending the emails regarding CTA and Dorval Carter, I would like to communicate that I spoke to Chairman Mitchell of the Transportation Committee, and Pres. Carter had agreed to attend a committee hearing and the date was set for this quarter.
The CTA will likely have to secure new revenue sources or make severe service cuts to balance its projected budget deficit of $576.9 million in FY2026 when federal COVID funds run out. Regional and State leaders will need to find a solution.

Let me be clear. As someone who is representing and advocating for the 55,000 people that live in the ward as well as the 2.7 Million across the city now: we NEED to see a mortgage forbearance/rent freeze as we are 2 days away from rent being due for most people in the city. 1/

I was concerned that NASCAR was more cost for the city than benefit last term, disappointed yet not surprised that the concern is validated. We need to look at the exit clause of this contract.
Mayor Brandon Johnson said he got a "better deal" when he brought the much-debated NASCAR race back to Chicago.
The better deal? It's a $2M handshake agreement that leaves Chicago still short of the $3.5M in costs it faced last year,

Today, 15 Alders joined citywide mutual aid groups in urging
@ChicagosMayor
to end the 60 Day Shelter Eviction Policy, recognizing that it can likely lead to an increase in homelessness in Chicago.
Small bit of trivia, I actually designed the official City Council Zoom background! I work and then overwork - thats how Chicago does it!

One Fair Wage passes! Today, the City Council voted 36-10 to raise the minimum wage for tipped workers. It's a major victory in achieving better working conditions and more equitable pay for Chicago service workers. Huge thank you to everyone who fought so hard to see it succeed!
Caleb lived and was shot in our ward this weekend. He was a light in our community that was extinguished too soon. We need to address the root causes of
#GunViolence
so that we stop losing our people. I ask that people help continue the work he was doing and pray for the family.

2/Our Police Superintendent
@ChiefDavidBrown
is a failure and our Mayor defending his decision to only suspend after the Inspector General called for the case to be investigated again is both embarrassing and endangering to our communities.
This is dehumanizing to those in need, and will lead to an exponential growth in our city’s unhoused population. It is objectively worse conditions than police stations were.
We need unified shelter for all & work permits for all, whether through the federal or state government.
The number of migrants staying at Chicago's Office of Emergency Management's "landing zone" in the West Loop as they wait for shelter has climbed to 324.
We met with
@ChicagoDot
,
@ChiAlderwoman
, and
@40thforward
to talk about the bike lanes in our communities. We all deserve to live in safe, sustainable, and accessible environments. Our continued work to improve traffic safety is just one way we are working toward that goal.
3/This erodes trust and makes our city less safe, and it undermines any talk of accountability in a city with a history or racial profiling, torture, and misconduct that has led to hundred of millions of tax dollars paid out in settlements.
TLDR: I’ll be voting no on both the FOP agreement and arbitration legislation tomorrow, because the public deserves real police accountability, and this doesn’t accomplish that. Police accountability saves lives and the public an avg $100M/year in misconduct settlements.
The administration would like us to vote to support the agreement though it has not improved accountability. I cannot in good conscience do so.
I will be voting no on both the arbitration and the accountability components as they are both less than what the public deserves.
It's official: Metra announced today that the new Peterson/Ridge station will open to the public on May 20th, 2024! See the full update on our website.
This man spent a whole lot of characters to try and distance himself from his mentor and good friend. Check out his Sun Times quotes though.
P.S. I’ve got the same ordinance introduced and sitting in the Ethics committee. Ready when you are, Ray.
Today, the jury delivered justice.
I have known Ed Burke since 2012, shortly after being elected Democratic Committeeman of Chicago's 15th Ward. We have not always had a good relationship. In fact, he openly supported a candidate against me when I ran for Alderman in 2015.

New from me: Chicago, like most US cities, has seen traffic deaths climb in the past several years. So how has our neighbor to the north defied the trend?
(Spoiler: it involves forcing cars to slow down.)
36 years ago today, we lost our City’s Greatest Mayor, Harold Washington.
Every day, I think about where our city would be if his time in service hadn’t been cut short. I am grateful for the model he set for Chicago.
Rest In Peace, Mayor Washington.
TLDR: I’ll be voting no on both the FOP agreement and arbitration legislation tomorrow, because the public deserves real police accountability, and this doesn’t accomplish that. Police accountability saves lives and the public an avg $100M/year in misconduct settlements.
ICYMI: I took a look at Mayor Johnson's publicly announced terms for a proposed Fraternal Order of Police contract. The scheduled raises would be the largest in the city's recent history, more than even a package of 4% annually under Daley II.

If you are without power and have medications that need to be refrigerated, some pharmacies may be able to help with that. Contact your pharmacy to see it they can assist you.
Work permits for ALL is a sound policy. We have labor shortages and people aching to work and support their families. It’s a common sense solution that benefits our economy and increases public safety.
Glad that is raising up the issue and passing the bike lane violation enforcement ordinance led to this being moved forward. It needs to move faster, though!
Automated ticketing of drivers parked in bike and bus lanes downtown could begin this summer, more than a year after pilot program was approved
small comfort, but a positive move
Miss you Bean
And of course I had to come say hello to the

The 2020 Census officially omitted over 45,000 residents of our state.
I'm pleased the Census Bureau approved the correction for future estimates, bringing in millions in additional fed funding.
In fact, we've gained population in the prior decade contrary to reported declines.

It is a good thing that the “bipartisan” immigration bill failed as it would have been a right wing policy that even Reagan would have thought was extreme.
Many thanks to the movement, mutual aid groups, and alders who joined us in advocating, and to
@ChicagosMayor
for listening and collaborating to ensure that the city didn’t start evicting people on Feb 1!
JUST IN: Under pressure from City Council members, Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday pushed back — until mid-March at the earliest — the city’s plan to evict migrants living in the city’s 28 shelters after 60 days.
Alderman Hall and I are in the Chicago Tribune this week advocating for the City to take advantage of the shuttering of Peoples Gas' pipe replacement program to speed up replacement of the lead service lines that are poisoning our communities. Check it out!

made 3 city appointments. We are extremely disappointed that once again NO Latinos were appointed. Latinos account for nearly 33% of Chicago’s population. It is imperative that our voice be heard and represented in top leadership of this city.

THREAD Ald. Vasquez on CPAC
TL;DR I am one of the CO-SPONSORS of the CPAC legislation.
When I ran for this office, one of my core platforms was establishing a Civilian Police Accountability Council because what I understood then, and I hope that many more understand now,
A lot of us are new to this mask thing, so it's important to remind folks about the correct and effective way to wear one.
-Wear it all the way under your chin!
-Tighten the loops so it's snug around your face!
-Wear it all the way up to the bridge of your nose!
Thank you
@ChicagosMayor
for being responsive and making these latest appointments! It is heartening to have leadership that listens and is invested in having reflective leadership!
Mayor Brandon Johnson on Thursday announced two new appointments, tapping Jose Tirado to serve as OEMC’s new executive director and Lissette Castañeda to serve as commissioner for the Department of Housing.
Here is a glimpse into how bad it would have been to set up basecamps here for new arrivals, as well as a glimpse into how challenging a 60 day policy at shelters can make things for a city. We can avoid this through better planning & govt partnerships

Two Innovations High School students were fatally shot as they left their school Friday afternoon in the Loop.
According to Chicago police, the two boys were killed just before 12:30 p.m. near Millennium Park.
You may notice increased police presence across the northside this weekend, as the 20th and 24th District will be running a mission, including a command van and possible helicopter support, in response to the armed robberies last week.
Here’s a challenge for those who want to make arguments against Teachers Unions - instead of referring to “the Union”, say “the over 90% of all teachers in schools”. That might help put it in the proper perspective.
